Edward Norton on Robert DeNiro: "He's Not Intimidating. He's Weird." (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 23rd 2010 5:36AM
Edward Norton, 'The Daily Show'Whenever an actor works with Robert DeNiro on a film, they can expect to be asked about the venerable actor while doing the talk show circuit in promotion of it. But there's usually a sense of reverence or respect that goes into any conversations about DeNiro. Not so for Edward Norton on 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM on COM).

When Jon Stewart asked at what point the intimidation factor goes away and it becomes normal to be around DeNiro, Norton responded, "He's not intimidating. He's weird."

But then he started qualifying his comments right away, as if he was suddenly quite nervous. As if he felt a looming DeNiro-sized presence. "I love him and he knows I love him and I've said as much to him," he said, trying to soften the blow.

"When you say that to Bob DeNiro," Stewart asked. "Is there fear? Is there that moment where [you realize] that's the guy from 'Goodfellas.' What am I doing?"

But apparently Norton isn't frightened of DeNiro at all. "I'm four inches taller than him. He's getting older. He's shrinking."

Who knows how many more things he might have said about this American cinema legend if Stewart hadn't cut him off. "So this is your last movie with DeNiro?" he asked. If not, it may be the last time he's allowed to answer any questions about him.

im sure he didnt mean anything by wierd, just expressing a little humour.
Deniro is a very successful actor himself, but hes far from god.

Norton's a liberal, and apparently they don't just eat conservatives, they eat their own, too. Norton could only wish he could be half the actor DeNiro is, and end up having half the body of great work DeNiro has already accomplished. DeNiro gave the second best performance ever in a movie, in my opinion, in "Taxi Driver", second only to Rod Steiger in "The Pawnbroker". I've said it before, Robert DeNiro was as important an artist in the 20th Century, as Pablo Picasso, and continues that greatness into the 21st.

Oh, please. Robert De Niro isn't God Himself, he's just another actor. Yes, he's a wonderful actor, but that's as far as my respect of the man goes, personally speaking. Why should anyone be afraid or even moderately intimidated by him? God forbid someone even murmurs anything negative about the "great" Robert De Niro....ohhhh, I'm scared and in awe of his powerfulness.......@@..give me a break. It's refreshing to hear another actor say what he feels. He obviously likes Mr. De Niro, but doesn't feel the need to bow down and tip toe around like everyone else does, just because the man is a legend in the acting community.

dorahelen, you are so right. If, as he claims, he is a friend and likes him, why make such stupid comments about someone?

Disrespect won't get you very far Ed !
Actors and musicians should be seen and not heard, because your opinion gets to a bigger mass, and you always end up stuffing your foot in your mouths. It happens every time, and continuing to do it will get you black-listed. Does your dumb ass know what that means Edward ?

What do you base your remark on? Do you have personal knowledge of him? How much time have you spent with him? How long hava you known him that you think you are qualified to make such a "weird" statement?

Jason Hughes is very wrong with his grammar errors and opinionated comments. Norton was hardly nervous with regards to working with De Niro. He was simply being honest. Norton has become something of an American cinema legend himself. Have you even seen any of his films Jason Hughes?

De Niro isnt a king. Hes an actor, a man. Norton also doesnt kiss ass which is something Jason Hughes cant get his head out of with De Niro.
