Jimmy Smits Gushes Over Singer Jackie Evancho, Says She's "Like an Angel" (VIDEO)
We still kind of feel like 10-year-old opera singer Jackie Evancho should have won this year's 'America's Got Talent.' But whether you supported Jackie or not, the new 'Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC) makes one thing clear -- actor Jimmy Smits is a big, big fan.Smits and Evancho both showed up to chat with Jay Leno, and Jimmy revealed that he had been in the audience for one of Jackie's previous performances. He gushed with admiration for the pint-sized singer, saying that she was "like an angel," and adding that she had a "voice from God." Aw -- how sweet.
While talking with Jay, Jackie revealed that she had some crazy cheerleading skills, doing a cheer and a dance with the chant: "Let's get funky for a while! Get funky -- hey hey!" Nice. Evancho also mentioned that she had only been singing for the past two years! Wow. Most people could never reach that level of vocal skill in a lifetime of practicing scales and humming show-tunes ...
To close out her time on the show, Jackie sang Andrew Lloyd-Webber's version of 'Pie Jesu.' The song concludes with the words, "Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem." Which means, translated: "May the ranks of angels receive you ... may you have eternal rest."
Jackie may not literally be an angel -- though she is frequently compared to them and sings about them. But she did, at the very least, provide us with yet another haunting and moving performance tonight.
