'Dancing With the Stars' Season 11, Episode 3 Recap

by Michael Pascua, posted Sep 28th 2010 1:45AM
Jennifer Grey dancing her Jive['Dancing With the Stars' - 'Week 2 Performances']

I appreciated the fact that the 'Dancing With the Stars' producers placed the jive and quickstep in the same week since they're equally difficult dances due to their speed. It meant that the older and fatter contestants had a shot of holding up against their younger and healthier completion.

As the show began, I couldn't help but gawk at the triangles that emphasized Brooke's breasts throughout the whole episode. When the stars walked down, I couldn't help but love how Jennifer Grey loved her outfit and kept bouncing throughout the opening.

Sarah Palin was also on the show, but she was there as a supportive mother, not as a political figure. As such I hope she was happy with her daughter's performance.

Rick & Cheryl - Jive – Rick had an injured tendon that ended his career. While they took it easy during the practice, Rick danced as hard as he could. The lunge that was noted earlier didn't seem like an issue. Cheryl, like always, did all the work, but the couple opened the show strong.

Len was concerned, but saw the compacted nature that the jive needed. Bruno thought the dance was great for Week 2. Carrie Ann thought he was better suited for ballroom. Score: 21 (7,7,7).

Florence & CorkyQuickstep - Florence wanted to be seen as a contender, but was nervous about the quickstep, seeing how quick the pace was. I hated the unnecessary comedy in the beginning of the routine and the weird ending. The dance had slow moments and I found it interesting that Corky decided to use more of the Charleston.

Bruno knew the dance was difficult, but pointed out some hesitation. Carrie Ann appreciated her ease and elegance. Len thought her dancing was good enough to keep her next week. Score: 19 (7,6,6).

Brandy & Maks - Jive - Brandy messed up last week, but covered it well. Maks continued his hard teaching skills and Brandy, like every recent celebrity he had, gave him attitude. Brandy wasn't as in synchronization in the beginning, nor were her kicks as high as I would have liked them. I was confused by the dance sequence in the middle, because it didn't look jive at all. The arm sequence looked redundant.

Carrie Ann loved how happy she was, but she didn't point her toes. Len believed Brandy took a step back because she didn't have intent. Bruno compared her to a Harajuku Girl and thought the performance was okay. Score: 21 (7,7,7).

Michael & Chelsie Jive - Michael had laryngitis and couldn't work too hard during practice. He still sounded the same to me. He was traumatized from the critiques of Week 1. While I thought the opening sequence was hysterical, it wasted a lot of time. Michael looked like he was dancing with bricks for shoes. Chelsie was dragging him around the whole performance. His performance was on par with a Kate Gosselin performance. He even had that shopping cart look as he bumbled around.

Len saw basic steps, but the jive didn't fit him. Bruno thought the performance was a mess and danced badly. Carrie Ann knew he put effort into the performance, but his body was locked. Score: 12 (4,5,3).

Audrina & TonyQuickstep – Audrina's schedule was taking a toll on her relationships outside of 'DWTS.' She sucked it up and continued on. Audrina kept up with Tony and her kicks matched Tony's kicks. I really appreciated how Tony really used the whole dance floor from sides back to the center.

Bruno appreciated the movement and saw promise. Carrie Ann thought the performance was an improvement. Len thought it was the best dance at the point. Score: 23 (8,8,7).

Jennifer & Derek
- Jive - Jennifer had cancer and neck issues before 'DWTS' and now believed the television show saved her. The couple can't do any tricks because of her neck. Jennifer Grey continued to defy age as she danced around the floor. The dress definitely benefited her and did a lot of the work, but she had some of the best movements. It was interesting that you could see when Derek inserted slightly slower movements in the middle of the dance to help Jennifer breathe. I loved the arm sequence at the end of the routine and thought it well made up for a lack of tricks.

Carrie Ann compared her to a bionic bunny with unlimited energy. Len thought it was colorful and fabulous. Bruno thought the choreography was wicked and Jennifer nailed the performance. Score: 24 (8,8,8).

Margaret & Louis - Jive - Margaret continued to make really silly faces during the practice. Louis helped Margaret learn to be herself. Margaret started off being serious in the routine and she gained my support. While her kicks weren't the best, the fact was she was being serious and trying her hardest. She was quite wobbly throughout the performance. I was confused by her free hand when she was in hold; it looked like an ugly claw.

Len appreciated her dancing; he suggested fixing the kicks. Bruno wanted her to tighten and sharpen the movements. Carrie Ann saw the effort, but suggested working the shoulders and face. Score: 18 (6,6,6).

Kyle & Lacey - Quickstep - Kyle was obviously out of shape, so Lacey tried to get him to do exercise and cut fast food. Kyle believed the quickstep was too old, so Lacey added "hip" moves. Anyone who had to use "hip" is already too old. Lacey managed to keep the spirit of quickstep as the two danced. I found her dress to be horribly distracting and a great way to cover up Kyle's stomach. Kyle kept up with the performance and his charisma won over the audience.

Bruno thought it was a powerful performance, but he needed more control. Carrie Ann pointed out that he was flat-footed, but he danced hard. Len thought he was attacked by a feather duster, but somehow he liked the dance. Score: 22 (8,7,7).

Kurt & Anna
- Jive - During the practice, Kurt made dance suggestions for Anna, who really shouldn't have listened. There was a lot of time wasted in the beginning to set up the military story. I hated that Kurt was singing along while he was performing. I couldn't forgive the really cheesy moves that he tried to slip into the performance. His arm still needed extension and the final slide was unnecessary.

Carrie Ann compared him to a drunken uncle at a party. She liked the ease. Len thought it was improved from last week. Bruno loved the flow, and hoped to see more. Score: 21 (7,7,7).

Mike "The Situation" & Karina - Jive - Karina unleashed several techniques for teaching, including taping his legs and using a stick for posture, but unfortunately it didn't help. Mike was a bit awkward at first, but you could see he tried and looked down at several points to keep in the right position. He hobbled around like a rabbit half the time. It was pretty smart that Karina kept him in hold during the performance. I'm not sure if the jump sequence was wrong or just ugly, but it looked out of sync and was a weak ending to the performance.

Len thought it was unfortunate throughout the performance, but he did better than last week. Bruno saw that he wanted to do well, but he looked drunk. Carrie Ann thought he had no musicality. She also pointed out his horrible pigeon-toe. Score: 18 (6,6,6).

Bristol & Mark - Quickstep - Bristol brought Mark to Alaska and he met Sarah Palin. They had less time, but practiced hard. Bristol was a bit rusty, but she benefited from Mark dragging her around most of the performance. Most of their dance sequence looked precise, so I wondered if Mark's choreography was too basic.

Bruno loved the natural charm, but he suggested becoming an actress on the dance floor. Carrie Ann was reminded of Kelly Osbourne and hoped to see her survive longer. Len thought it was neat and precise, but it needed more wow. Score: 22 (7,8,7).

Final Scores

High

Jennifer & Derek – 24
Audrina & Tony - 23
Kyle & Lacey - 22
Bristol & Mark – 22

Middle
Brandy & Maks - 21
Rick & Cheryl - 21
Kurt & Anna – 21
Florence & Corky - 19

Low
Margaret & Louis - 18
The Situation & Katina - 18
Michael & Chelsie - 12

There is no way possible that Michael Bolton will survive with a 12. He's jumped from Kate Gosselin territory to Buzz Aldrin or Master P status. His "whatever" tantrum was also childish. I had a feeling that Chelsie just retorted it and he blew it out of proportion.

For an interesting angle of the show, watch Bruno in the background of the dances. He actually checked if the contestants were in the correct rhythm and leaned when the contestants got too lose to the judging table.

Was Bruno Tonioli too harsh on Michael Bolton, calling his jive the 'worst in 11 seasons' of 'Dancing with the Stars'?

It may have been rude to boo Sarah Palin but why was she interviewed anyway? The other contestants have family members there to support them. I would have rather heard from Jamie Lee Curtis.

I think Michael Bolton should be sent packing tonight. He has a lousy attitude and his dancing is awful. It was rude to boo Sarah Palin last night. She is there not as a politician, but as a parent to watch her child perform. Bristol is much better than I thought she would be and yes, the Situation is really pigeon-toed! Wow. Brandy acted like a Diva last night and did throw Max under the bus. She danced poorly, although the judges treaded lightly on that one.

Felton, that was just rude...seriously. You don't like Bristol Palin fine, but she is a young girl and she is far from 'cow-looking.' (and no, I am not a fan of hers.)

Can I just say that I love Jennifer Grey, and I would hardly say she is a ringer. She was in one movie in which she had to dance, what 20 years ago? That hardly is a ringer. she just looks so happy to be there, and really seems to enjoy dancing, and THAT is what I want to see.

And Kyle Massey is just too cute.

An advocate against teen pregnancy? Isn't that like closing the barn door after the cow got out. And speaking of cows-she isn't too far away from looking like one. I think they should rename the show "Dancing with the people who will get the biggest ratings"

"Queen" I could not agree with you more. You said it all and I felt exactly the same. As far as I'm concerned, Brandy should go home tonight. The practice was bad enough but when she threw him under the bus in front of the judges I just saw red. I don't care what the scores are, I live to see her gone. And once again, the "star" with previous dance experience is in the lead. Derek got the ringer again with Jennifer. Michael will probably go but I am really hoping Brandy hits the road.

I think obviously Michael Bolton will be the next to go and then hopefully Bristol Palin. The show is called Dancing with the Stars, she was working as a receptionist for a dermatologist... give me a break. Does the world really need an excuse to give anything Palinesk more time in the press? No offense to Bristol, but who's next as a "star" octamom or the crazy flight attendant guy? Surely ABC can make better choices for next season.

I'm a HUGE fan of yours Maksim,& I WAS a fan of Brandy, BUT SHE REEEALLY DISAPPOINTED ME TONIGHT & wasnt likeable AT ALL! Your dancing is AMAZING,but I'm literally FORCING myself to vote for you, b/c BRANDY TOTALLY TURNED ME OFF w/HOW DISRESPECTFUL SHE WAS TO YOU! I know youre too much of a gentleman to criticizer her,but I felt BAD FOR U! 1st, WHY'S SHE CALLING YOU AN ASSHOLE ON TV? HORRIBLE! 2nd, YOU were trying to defend her when Carrianne criticized her,BUT SHE SHUSHES YOU? Is she NUTS?

Lastly, she LITERALLY threw you under the bus when the judges criticized her SOLO......she said, "THAT WAS HIS FAULT!"

OMG!...ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I know you can be a tough teacher, but you didn't deserve that! I thought Brandy was a sweet girl, but NOT SO! I was TRULY pulling for her to get her career back, but NOT ANYMORE! The only reason I will vote....IF I vote, IT WILL BE FOR YOU!

XOXOXOX! GO MAKSIM! I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT YOU!!!
