Rapper Vanilla Ice Talks About Losing His Pet Kangaroo (Seriously! No Joke!) (VIDEO)
Okay, we'll admit it. Sometimes, we wish that late night hosts would have more unusual guests as their interview subjects. There are just so many shows with actors promoting their latest movie, singers promoting their latest album ... But then, in defiance of this trend, we get a weird guest like former '80s rapper Vanilla Ice. And then, he's telling us a story about losing his pet kangaroo -- and suddenly, it all becomes so much better. And yes, this is what actually happens on 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC). Rapper Robert Matthew Van Winkle -- that's "Mr. Ice" to you -- talks with host Jay Leno about misplacing his beloved pet kangaroo. Yup, it's just another standard incident in the bizarre life of Vanilla Ice. Why, we haven't been this excited to hear from him since 'Ice Ice Baby' (the greatest song ever) was first released.
So now that we've gotten the obligatory mention of 'Ice Ice Baby' out of the way ... what's the deal with the kangaroo? Well, Ice is a big fan of exotic animals: He owns a monkey, a lynx, and yes, a kangaroo. But while Vanilla was away in London, the 'roo managed to escape. "I get back home, and my wife says, 'Y'know, the kangaroo's gone.'"
Leno attempts to grapple with this whole concept: "What do you mean, the kangaroo's gone?" Here's Vanilla's nonchalant response: "Well, he grew up with this goat ... " Awesomely, this is one of the most normal things that the rapper says during the entire interview. Yes, of course the huge Australian marsupial grew up with a goat. Makes perfect sense -- if your name is "Vanilla Ice."
What happened was this -- the goat escaped from the house, and so the 'roo followed it. Next, the pair of animals disappeared for two weeks. Eventually, one of Vanilla's friends saw footage of the kangaroo on CNN. At this point, the friend called up Mr. Ice, and Vanilla recognized his lost pet on TV. The animal and his owner were then reunited. And the goat was fine too, thank god.
Here are two additional facts that we learned while researching this article:
1) Although Vanilla didn't make this clear on 'The Tonight Show,' the pet was not technically a kangaroo. Rather, it was a "wallaroo" -- which is a hybrid of a kangaroo and a wallaby.
2) The pet's name was "Bucky Buckaroo." And we have to admit ... that's a pretty cool name for a wallaroo.
Finally (and for no major reason), here's a video where Vanilla Ice hangs out with some other animals -- in this case, some turtles. And yeah, there was no way we were making it through this whole column without linking to the second greatest song ever.
