Three 'Deadliest Catch' Stars Abandon Ship

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 29th 2010 11:00AM
'Deadliest Catch'With a major lawsuit pending, it's not surprising that three stars of Discovery Channel's 'Deadliest Catch' have announced they are leaving the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Capts. Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand, who are both being sued by the network, and colleague Capt. Sig Hansen said they will not continue on the series about crab fishermen in Alaska.

"We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in 'Deadliest Catch,'" the three men said in a statement. "It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive 'Catch' fans we have met over the years."

Discovery Channel is suing the Hillstrands for $3 million for allegedly not completing work on a spinoff show they agreed to film. The network argued
that the Hillstrands completed two weeks of principal photography for a show about their lives in Alaska, then refused to sit for interviews necessary to complete the project.

A lawyer for the brothers said in a statement, "Three million dollars is exponentially greater than any compensation ever paid to the 'Deadliest Catch' captains, and yet this is the figure Discovery is trying to extort from these men." He said the Hillstrands will likely have to declare bankruptcy, fire their crews and sell their boats to pay for the lawsuit.

This is terrible!! I can not understand how they can sue for this amount of money. I know that they were not going to make this for being in the show. And I am sure they didn't spend this much documenting what ever it is that they have!!

I think the Discovery Execs have a secret grudge against the Hillstrand Brothers for doing those Geico commercials. BTW, I wonder how much they got paid for those? Maybe not $3 mil, but a pretty penny, I'm sure. I'll bet Discovery wants a piece of it.

Bottom line is... reality TV relies on excessive drama. Jesse James (Monster Garage) wouldn't play - cancelled...American Chopper - catalog bolt-ons - rediculous... Deadliest Catch - still too much drama... Honor your contract/commitments, draw your check and then walk away... Also, to TL page: you made your point, you've said the same thing 4 times in 2 days, your landlord is rich, you live in a shithole, you sound bitter, and you don't like laywers... enough already.

I live in New Bedford Massachusetts which is as dependant on commercial fishing as much as Alaska. fisherman not only fight nature and the elements they also have to fight against an intrusive goverment who wants to regulate the industry to death. for those who knock this show, they dont know very much about which they speak. Discovery wanted to film a show about New Bedford fishermen, but they only wanted the boats to go out during the worst of weather, to further dramatize the show. Once again, they seemed more concerned with ratings than the safety of the the fisherman or their own camera crews.

I love the show. Once a year when the show is over my wife and I go out and get a big fat order of king crabs. I also will not watch Discovery.

Bravo, Discovery Channel. Who's the idiot who decided to sue? Are you that stupid? These guys have made you TONS of money and made the whole show. It's bad enough that Phil is gone. Now Sig and Jonathan? I think your ratings just took a nose dive. Sell your stocks everyone. I will continue to follow Sig, The Hillstrand's, Jake and Josh elsewhere. The Discovery channel is off limits in our house. Is this just a publicity stunt by The Discovery Channel?> If so....SHAME ON YOU!! What goes around, comes around.
