Happy World Vegetarian Day to Our Favorite TV Herbivores

by Chris Harnick, posted Oct 1st 2010 10:40AM
Lisa SimpsonIt's the most important holiday EVER today. No, not my birthday, it's World Vegetarian Day!

As one of the token vegetarians around the TV Squad offices, I know all about the hardships of choosing to remain meat-free. But hey, I'm not alone. I've got millions of other vegetarian and vegan brethren -- even fictional ones!

In honor of this joyous holiday, I'm grilling up some tofu and paying respect to some of TV's best vegetarians. There aren't many TV characters who are vegetarians, and there's a surprising lack of male vegetarians, but it is easy to play favorites.

Lisa Simpson, 'The Simpsons'
The middle child from 'The Simpsons' introduced vegetarianism to loads of impressionable viewers. My brother denies this, but he was inspired by Lisa to take up the vegetarian cause and later went vegan for a few years. Lisa's turn to vegetarianism even brought Paul and Linda McCartney to Springfield for a special cameo. Lisa has stayed a vegetarian since season 7, despite the lack of support from her family as seen below.

Phoebe Buffay, 'Friends'
One of my favorite TV hippies is also one of my favorite vegetarians! Well, except when she gave up being a vegetarian to eat meat during her pregnancy ... that wasn't too cool. Otherwise, the 'Smelly Cat' singer was tops.

Rachel Berry, 'Glee'
Like her portrayer Lea Michele, Rachel is a vegan. In the episode 'Funk,' Rachel's ex-boyfriend Jesse and the rival glee club throw eggs at her in an effort to humiliate and disturb her. Poor Rachel, but more power to her for being vegan!

Angela Martin, 'The Office'
One of my favorite cat lovers is also a vegetarian! Sure, she has many, many personality problems, but she gets an A+ for being a vegetarian. However, she refused to eat the Indian food that was mostly vegetarian in 'Diwali,' chalk that up to her uptight nature.

Sara Sidle, 'CSI'
Sara, like actress Jorja Fox, is a vegetarian. She became one after spending a night with a dead pig and Grissom. In the 2002 episode 'Burden of Proof,' Sara gets sassy with Grissom about her vegetarianism. "I'm a vegetarian, everyone here knows I'm a vegetarian," she said. "I haven't eaten meat since we stayed up that night with that dead pig. It pains me to see ground beef. Forget about cleaning it up." Bonus, Fox's 'ER' character, Dr. Maggie Doyle, was also a vegetarian.

Mac, 'Veronica Mars'
Perhaps one of the most underused and wittiest characters on TV, Mac (Tina Majorino) constantly stole the scene from Veronica Mars herself Kristen Bell. In her second appearance, the season 1 episode 'Silence of the Lamb,' Mac's mom asks Veronica if she's vegan, like Mac. This fact is sadly later forgotten in season 3 when Veronica and Mac go undercover to infiltrate an animal rights group.

Spock, 'Star Trek'
Like all Vulcans, Spock is a pescatarian/vegetarian. However, he did slip once or twice and eat meat ... like when he was trapped in a cave. See below.
