'Project Runway' - Season 8, Episode 10 Recap

April and her mother get a day off from designing.['Project Runway' - 'There's a Pattern Here']

'Project Runway' is hateful for making the most deceptive commercial previews. For a good week, they have been toting this "Someone Will Break the Rules" storyline. So what happened this week? Nothing! It's in the preview for next week. Again.

The challenge was a re-hash of last season's HP challenge where the contestants got to design their own textile patterns. Sadly most of the outfits paled in comparison to Seth Aaron's jacket or Emilio's skirt. This season the contestants had to use childhood memories as their inspiration.

Most of the contestants had their mothers come and visit, except for Michael C. who got his mother and his son, and Christopher who had his very attractive partner visit. Each of them got time off to vent about life, but it took its toll on Andy who lost all his focus. Sadly, he threw his mother under the bus during the critique. Andy's dress looked like a weird '60s hooker. Andy really should be eliminated, even though his clothes last week were amazing.

Ivy must be jealous because the show has really become the Mondo show. Not only did Mondo continue his amazing streak of really edgy pattern matching and silhouette, but he opened up to America a huge secret: He's HIV positive. Not only was that hugely brave, but when he told the judges it made sense to them, and they realized how his pattern lifted a negative situation into a positive one. The amazing thing about his pattern was that he matched it perfectly on the legs so you couldn't notice any seaming issues. He was the clear winner for a third week in a row.

Gretchen had a slight moment of humanity with her mother, but she quickly returned into being a bitch when work progressed. When she called Christopher's dress a C+ and considered making a boyfriend sweater for her own outfit, I knew that she only talks the talk. While I understood her whole "Southwestern Peacock" design, two thoughts stayed in my head: The NBC logo, and that her model's breasts looked twisted because of the pattern. I have no clue what "disco earthy" was, but guest judge Rachel Roy's "almost" critique was where I was going.

When Valerie said "I'm gonna design like I did in the beginning of the competition," I didn't think she was literally going to borrow ideas from her napkin dress. The skirt of the dress had promise, but why she created that top was beyond me. The top was not sexy, but the blue slip on the bottom was a bigger offender. When she was eliminated, I thought her good-bye speech to all the contestants reminded me of 'The Wizard of Oz.'

As for the rest of the contestants, April's design was nice, but she hasn't really broken her mold. It's shocking that neither Nina Garcia nor Michael Kors have called her a one-note designer, instead of "consistent." We haven't seen big splashes of color from her at all and that's worrying. When she tried to add color, Tim suggested removing it. How Christopher is still on this show is frankly baffling. Aren't we beyond shopping at Sears? The design that Michael C. made originally was so much better than his final product. He had no "tie" element in his original concept and the yellow touches felt wrong for the "evil eye" theme he had. Why he didn't use red elements? They would have tied into the pattern.

There were moments that made us realize Valerie will be missed -- she stopped saying "Cray Cray" early on. She mentioned the phrase "LatAsian" which made it seem that Ivy was nicer than she was portrayed, or there would at least me some interesting moments between Valerie and Ivy that are now on the cutting room floor.

Continuig to thin the pool, as projected. All the true backstabbers are gone (unless the much-projected flameout becomes once again Gretchen hating on Michael). Just design, girls. Just design.
I think the final two women are actually in the finals. The strength of this season (as opposed to the lost season in Calif.) is the judges are able to say what they seek project-to-project and what they expect or fail to see in the designers. we all forget this show is tapend in a very compact real time; it is not like the designers have a week to do one thing and then time off before the next one. They are slammed against each project as the previous one ends in a tizzy of complex stresses.
If the final two women are in the finals, that leaves room for either Mondo or Michael. Gretchen and Mondo may well be the stars of the future but that dpoesn't guarantee finals (so I may be wrong); Even Mr. Fierce himself coulda been offed in his season when he gave up on the prom dress challenge. He was in the Final Two and slid onward.

I did have a problem with Mondo concealing a health problem. All the other show stars acted surprised (and no way could he lose the challenge after his reveal) so I am guessing it was a surprise and not a reality show script. I am not scared of gay people or their personal dilemmas. But. I think anyone with a communicable disease of any sort should have come clean from the start, no matter the personal price. Now he will be viewed differently, either for a misplaced courage tag or from pity for having this speed bump in his life.

@Mike: The only way Mondo could have "communicated" his disease would have been to have unprotected sex with one of the contestants, shared a needle with them, or bled all over them. Misinformed people like you are the EXACT reason why HIV-positive people frequently hide their status, and why they view revelation of that fact as a big deal. The "courage" tag is in no way misplaced.

And to my eye, there was no doubt that Mondo was the clear-cut winner of the challenge, revelations notwithstanding.

Gretchen isn't just a bitch but a self absorbed one tossing out comments and whining every other edit like she is a judge on the show. Her designs are bland period. As Mondo came out and told his story I could just imagine her rolling her eyes while mouthing "dam how can my sob story top his now?" Crist in a can it's a stepfather not your biological one. And then she goes I was glad I was here when he finally spoke out and said this? Yes honey you're the one that is most important and it was about you being there not him finally admitting it.
I can see her coming back next week going during judging "Well Heidi, Michael, and Nina I'd like to come out of the closet this week and say I also have breast cancer please adore me I haven't won in 7 weeks now."

I would rather have seen Andy's hideous top go home.

I don't understand the name calling that continues. How do you "know" Gretchen is a bitch? She's a strong woman with opinions? How come Michael C isn't a bitch? He's constantly making catty, on-camera remarks about the others. The bottom line is that finger-pointing is an exercise in projection. Period. You are merely projecting your fear and insecurity on the other person. Gretchen is no more a bitch than you are. How unkind (and bitchy) of you to say so. See?

I don't know what show you were watching because you mentioned Ivy being jealous and Ivy left last week. You also talk about Andy's dress looking like a weird 60's hooker....interesting because he made shorts and a blouse. Then you comment about Gretchen giving Christopher's dress a C+....really? He made a blouse and slacks. Did you even watch this show?
