David E. Kelley to Bring Back 'Wonder Woman'

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 4th 2010 8:05AM
Wonder WomanRight now you could be forgiven for thinking that there are no new ideas in the world of TV. Hot on the heels of news that networks in search of hits are revisiting such classics as 'The Munsters,' comes news that David E. Kelley ('Ally McBeal') is dusting off Wonder Woman's star-spangled shorts for Warner Bros. Television.

According to deadline.com Kelley has long been wanting to tackle the World War II-era heroine, and he recently met with the DC team, who also have been looking for ways to launch a new Wonder Woman TV franchise.

Details on Kelley's TV series are being kept under wraps, and it's not clear if the new Wonder Woman (a.k.a. Diana Prince) will be the old familiar Wonder Woman or the redesigned Goth reboot announced by DC earlier this year.

Warner Bros has had TV success before with DC characters in 'Smallville' and 'Human Target,' but Wonder Woman's been a difficult project for years. At one stage Joss Whedon was onboard to write and direct a feature film, and only last May Warner Bros. announced a new movie was in the works. However, the most powerful female superhero has stubbornly resisted all screen versions since the '70s.

The most successful screen adaptation of the 'Wonder Woman' comic books was the TV series 'The New Adventures of Wonder Woman,' which starred Lynda Carter in the title role and aired from 1975-9, first on ABC and then on CBS. The fact that Carter has since become synonymous with the character certainly presents a challenge in casting the role if Kelley's adaptation goes ahead.

So far there's been no word on casting (see what suggestions our friends at PopEater have already come up with) or on whether she'll keep her signature powers and weapons like her indestructible bracelets, Lasso of Truth, tiara and her invisible airplane. And will she twirl? We'll just have to wait and see.

If David E. Kelley puts Wonder Woman in that terrible new outfit I am not watching it. I'd like to see people try to screw with Superman and Batman's costume like they did with Wonder Woman's and see how they react. It's not Wonder Woman anymore.

I remember when "Wonder Woman" was a happening hit.  It will be difficult to fill Lynda Carter's boots.  She was, and still is, beautiful, talented and amazingly grounded.  Thus far, I haven't seen anyone in Hollywood who can come close.  Good luck with that one and a hearty greeting to Ms Carter, wherever she is.  She IS "Wonder Woman."

What do you all think of Megan Fox as the new Wonder Woman?

I remember reading an article about 10 years back that Sandra Bullock was considered for a big screen adaption of Wonder Woman. That would of been cool. However, Lynda Carter will always be Wonder Woman to me, I first remember watching the show in 1978 when I was five years old.
If this gets off the ground, hopefully it won't be a bomb like the remake of Bionic Woman. The actress who played Jamie Summers was not great, and the camp factor from the original series was missing. No wonder why it got canned so fast. No one can replace Lindsay Wagner.
I also feel the same for "Charlie's Angels", Drew Barrymore and company did a fun job, but no one can replace Farrah, Kate, Jacklyn, and Cheryl.

Nadia Bjorlin is a better choice than anything I´ve seen out there. She totally fits the part. She is statuesque, queen like, amazing body!!! With curves and muscle, limbs and beauty such as out of a fantasy comic book. And I am just a woman... Men must be blind or think her goddess-like!
I say they need to take a closer look at her for the part.

Great hara, I hope the timeslot on NBC for the
return of Wonder Woman won't interfer in my schedule
for watching WWE Monday Night Raw. I'm now a big DC
Comics fan, and can't wait to see who plays her.
Just out of curiousity which may kill the cat, is
there any chance of getting a Superfriends crossover
out of this series, or at least Darksyde and Cheetah,
Wonder Woman's respective stalker and arch enemy?

So who for Wonder Women?

Eliza D -

How about an "Unknown". There must be some athelic ex-college type (e.g. gymnast, cheerleader, martial-artist, tennis player) who can act.

I would be okay if they go costume-less or build to it for the S1 finale.

More important then the costumes will be the show mythology, plot/arcs, and the acting.

The smart thing to do would be to make the costume more 'realistic' in so far that you would believe an Amazonian Warrior Princess would wear it in battle.

In all seriousness, take a look at the costume they put Erica Durance in one of Smallville's Eps last year. I think it was the Sci-Fi convention story. The costume was an obvious homage to Wonder Woman, and had that Gladiator/Xena vibe to it.

It's on this page.

THAT's what they should go for. Not the "how does she not fall out of that?" bustier, or the "I'm Dark Wonder Woman." crap they're doing now.
