David E. Kelley to Bring Back 'Wonder Woman'
Right now you could be forgiven for thinking that there are no new ideas in the world of TV. Hot on the heels of news that networks in search of hits are revisiting such classics as 'The Munsters,' comes news that David E. Kelley ('Ally McBeal') is dusting off Wonder Woman's star-spangled shorts for Warner Bros. Television.According to deadline.com Kelley has long been wanting to tackle the World War II-era heroine, and he recently met with the DC team, who also have been looking for ways to launch a new Wonder Woman TV franchise.
Details on Kelley's TV series are being kept under wraps, and it's not clear if the new Wonder Woman (a.k.a. Diana Prince) will be the old familiar Wonder Woman or the redesigned Goth reboot announced by DC earlier this year.
Warner Bros has had TV success before with DC characters in 'Smallville' and 'Human Target,' but Wonder Woman's been a difficult project for years. At one stage Joss Whedon was onboard to write and direct a feature film, and only last May Warner Bros. announced a new movie was in the works. However, the most powerful female superhero has stubbornly resisted all screen versions since the '70s.
The most successful screen adaptation of the 'Wonder Woman' comic books was the TV series 'The New Adventures of Wonder Woman,' which starred Lynda Carter in the title role and aired from 1975-9, first on ABC and then on CBS. The fact that Carter has since become synonymous with the character certainly presents a challenge in casting the role if Kelley's adaptation goes ahead.
So far there's been no word on casting (see what suggestions our friends at PopEater have already come up with) or on whether she'll keep her signature powers and weapons like her indestructible bracelets, Lasso of Truth, tiara and her invisible airplane. And will she twirl? We'll just have to wait and see.
