'Smallvile' Season 10, Episode 3 Recap
['Smallville' – 'Supergirl'] Fying lessons! Superhero confessions! Bondage gear! This is shaping up to become one of the best and most enjoyable seasons of 'Smallville' ever. It's too bad Clark will be flying away from our TV screens for good at the end of it, but at least the show is going out on a high note with more fun stories and scenes inspired by its DC Comics source material.
Two of the most important women in Clark's life returned to Metropolis last night – Lois and Kara. Seeing Lois show up at the press conference at the start of the episode was a big relief. I don't think anyone wanted to sit through another handful of episodes with Clark pining away as she went on some dubious African adventure.
In a twist to the classic Superman story, Kara revealed her superpowers to the world before Clark even learned how to fly. This development might bug comic book fans, but it worked here and it reminded us that Clark is still a hero in training (despite looking like a 37-year-old man!).
Surprisingly, 'Supergirl' turned out to be a pretty important episode, and it cleverly set up and continued some of the season's major themes and plotlines.
First off, it showed us Darkseid's true powers and intentions (That was supposed to be Darkseid, right?). Guest star Michael Daingerfield did a great job playing Godfrey, the fear-mongering conservative pundit possessed by an evil alien overlord (Shades of Glenn Beck?). Too bad Daingerfield won't be sticking around to play Darkseid/Godfrey for the rest of the season. He was equally smart and creepy, and it was a nice change of pace to see our heroes face off against an older baddie.
Kara's return signaled Jor-El's loss of faith in Clark. It seems our boy isn't "pure of heart," and he's lacking "clarity of purpose," which means he's vulnerable to the darkness that came through the portal. Jor-El was pretty harsh with Clark here. According to Kara, he disowned Clark and asked Kara to take his place as the one to stop the great darkness, Darkseid, from infecting the world.
Despite Jor-El's lack of faith, Kara still saw potential in Clark. Her "you can't even fly" line was a bit harsh, but she countered that by giving him a flying lesson at the Kent farm. He failed and crashed through the roof of the barn, of course, but the scene was still a joy to watch. It's always fun seeing a superhero physically struggle to control his powers – even if takes him 10 seasons to figure them out.
Laura Vandervoort got her chance to shine as the red and blue-clad superhottie here, but Erica Durance stole the show. It was great to see Lois jump back into reporter/sleuth mode in this ep. She even delivered one of the best lines of the night: "Break out the marshmallows, Clark. I'm gonna roast this turkey!"
Lois also got to strap on a fun and sexy costume after driving Godfrey to Metropolis' kinky bondage club. Wait, Metropolis has a bondage club? Who knew? The scenes in the club were a little surprising – who ever thought we'd see two leather-clad ladies performing a lap dance on a creepy perv on 'Smallville?' Not me.
The ep ended with Oliver finally coming out as Green Arrow, echoing Tony Stark's reveal at the end of the first 'Iron Man' movie. Ollie's public unmasking was telegraphed last week when he told Clark that the heroes need to "forge a new fate" and step out of the shadows. It'll be interesting to see what this new fate has in store for Ollie and the rest of the show's heroes.
The callbacks to seasons past continue next week with the return of Brainiac (James Marsters playing Brainiac 5) and Clark's high school reunion. Here's hoping that going back to where it all began will remind Clark of how far he's come.
'Smallville' airs Fridays at 8PM ET on The CW.
