'Smallvile' Season 10, Episode 3 Recap

Fying lessons! Superhero confessions! Bondage gear! This is shaping up to become one of the best and most enjoyable seasons of 'Smallville' ever. It's too bad Clark will be flying away from our TV screens for good at the end of it, but at least the show is going out on a high note with more fun stories and scenes inspired by its DC Comics source material.

Two of the most important women in Clark's life returned to Metropolis last night – Lois and Kara. Seeing Lois show up at the press conference at the start of the episode was a big relief. I don't think anyone wanted to sit through another handful of episodes with Clark pining away as she went on some dubious African adventure.

In a twist to the classic Superman story, Kara revealed her superpowers to the world before Clark even learned how to fly. This development might bug comic book fans, but it worked here and it reminded us that Clark is still a hero in training (despite looking like a 37-year-old man!).

Surprisingly, 'Supergirl' turned out to be a pretty important episode, and it cleverly set up and continued some of the season's major themes and plotlines.

First off, it showed us Darkseid's true powers and intentions (That was supposed to be Darkseid, right?). Guest star Michael Daingerfield did a great job playing Godfrey, the fear-mongering conservative pundit possessed by an evil alien overlord (Shades of Glenn Beck?). Too bad Daingerfield won't be sticking around to play Darkseid/Godfrey for the rest of the season. He was equally smart and creepy, and it was a nice change of pace to see our heroes face off against an older baddie.

Kara's return signaled Jor-El's loss of faith in Clark. It seems our boy isn't "pure of heart," and he's lacking "clarity of purpose," which means he's vulnerable to the darkness that came through the portal. Jor-El was pretty harsh with Clark here. According to Kara, he disowned Clark and asked Kara to take his place as the one to stop the great darkness, Darkseid, from infecting the world.

Despite Jor-El's lack of faith, Kara still saw potential in Clark. Her "you can't even fly" line was a bit harsh, but she countered that by giving him a flying lesson at the Kent farm. He failed and crashed through the roof of the barn, of course, but the scene was still a joy to watch. It's always fun seeing a superhero physically struggle to control his powers – even if takes him 10 seasons to figure them out.

Laura Vandervoort got her chance to shine as the red and blue-clad superhottie here, but Erica Durance stole the show. It was great to see Lois jump back into reporter/sleuth mode in this ep. She even delivered one of the best lines of the night: "Break out the marshmallows, Clark. I'm gonna roast this turkey!"

Lois also got to strap on a fun and sexy costume after driving Godfrey to Metropolis' kinky bondage club. Wait, Metropolis has a bondage club? Who knew? The scenes in the club were a little surprising – who ever thought we'd see two leather-clad ladies performing a lap dance on a creepy perv on 'Smallville?' Not me.

The ep ended with Oliver finally coming out as Green Arrow, echoing Tony Stark's reveal at the end of the first 'Iron Man' movie. Ollie's public unmasking was telegraphed last week when he told Clark that the heroes need to "forge a new fate" and step out of the shadows. It'll be interesting to see what this new fate has in store for Ollie and the rest of the show's heroes.

The callbacks to seasons past continue next week with the return of Brainiac (James Marsters playing Brainiac 5) and Clark's high school reunion. Here's hoping that going back to where it all began will remind Clark of how far he's come.

'Smallville' airs Fridays at 8PM ET on The CW.

After being a loyal Smallville fan from the beginning (even during the long slog through the "meteor freak of the week" period). I gave up on it for the last two seasons. Coming back this year has been a refreshing surprise. I think they're going out with a bang.

I think the biggest thing wrong with the young people today is, they have no heros. The people in the news are not heros....The ones who claim they are, are just in it for the money and fame. We have no super heros for these kids, in sports, they think they are gods..getting way to much money, breaking laws and thinking they can do no wrong. TV, shows most of the things that are wrong with our lives or a make believe life that makes them think they can get something for nothing...they don`t understand what doing without or having to work for it means. My Mother always told me to learn a trade with your hands then your brain. We had all the make believe heros who showed us right from wrong. The TV had greats like Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger and I can still tell you the names of all the horses and their side kicks. We can`t turn back time but we need to get some REAL heros out their for these kids.

I am in my late 60's and as a child enjoyed comics somewhat. I was always a GREEN LANTERN fan. I have seen all of my younger years super heros come alive on tv over the years. Its a great break from the true daily drudge of the real world.

Great episode, except for the extremely lazy way Godfrey was presented.

First of all, before the "darkness" took him, he was talking about controlling illegal immigration and for law and order (as opposed to the chaos and unlawful actions of vigilantes), then he said, "We may be few..."

Well, I know liberals don't like to accept the truth of this, but there are many people, not just on the right, but in the middle, too, who believe in law and order and curtailing illegal immigration.

While I have nothing but loathing for Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin, I also feel the same exact loathing towards Bill Mahrer and Keith Olbermann and Obamanation.

Evil lies everywhere. Wanting to curtail illegal immigration doesn't make one evil, or petty, or mean you have "darkness" inside you.

You know what's dark? Wanting illegal immigrants who in the country to produce American citizen babies, who grow up beholden to government social programs and more likely to vote for the party that keeps those programs alive.

THAT is darkness.

Yep. Why can't the radio personality ever be a crazy socialist liberal like Keith Olbermann? Why does it always have to be a crazy conservative?

Just lazy.

Lois is not in reporter mode. I hate what they have done to Lois on this show. She is not a real journalist on Smallville. She is a propagandist.

She is just as bad as Godfrey. She reports with an agenda. It reminds me how people bash Glen Beck but hold up John Stewart as some truth carrier. But both are two sides of the same coin.

Lois should not be fighting the heroes battles. She should support them but not to this extent, where she has become nothing but a cheerleader. No journalist thinks everything is so one sided and black/white like this version of Lois Lane.

If she was a real reporter, Oliver Queen could have actually told her the story. But she takes it upon herself to to slant of stories instead of telling them. She more PR than reporter.

Only an idiot view John Stewart as a real journalist and he will even admit that he isn't, Beck on the other hand thinks he is receiving the word of god, tow sides of the same coin? I think not.

John Stewart has the only show on TV (including broadcast news shows and cable news networks) with a large, full-time staff of fact-checkers who make sure every fact presented is accurate. Even if he is an anti-right-wing comedian, his show contains more truth than anything else on TV at the moment.

I have to disagree, seeing Lois (Erica Durance) back was such a let down. Clark is a GROWN man, he should be able to cope with a lost love, I think just about every person in the world has at one point or another. Still, he goes to pieces? What kind of man, much less a superman, does that? Lois is like a a deer in the headlights, she gets herself in trouble and gets saved. Chloe always took care of herself and the team. Please just write Lois out.

They are star crossed lovers, she can't be written off. Have you forgotten the grueling relationship of Clark and Lana? This is 10x better than that situation.

don't say "strap on" and "bondage" in the same sentence.
