'Extreme Makeover' -- Laughter Instead of Tears, as Comedians Help Out (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 11th 2010 4:16AM
'Extreme Makeover' -- Laughter Instead of Tears, as Comedians Help Out'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), promised a "tear-free" episode. And that's what we got ... almost. In place of the standard sob-fest, the producers guaranteed a completely upbeat show. To accomplish this, they enlisted a bunch of comedians -- including Cedric the Entertainer, Paul Rodriguez and Tommy Davidson.

The series went to Houston, Texas to help the Johnson family, whose house was damaged by Hurricane Ike. As a result of the hurricane, the locks in the Johnson's tiny home had to be opened with a screwdriver. But was just the start of the problems. The floor was rotting, the roof was caving in -- and the family had to eat off of paper plates ... because the weight of real plates would cause their shelves to collapse.

Cedric and the other comics helped move the family -- to a house that was six times larger than the old place. Parents Eric and Elaine Johnson saw Cedric perform during one of their first dates, so the whole thing made sense as a theme. But the "no-tears" concept was botched once during the episode. The family ended up getting pretty emotional after seeing their new home. "We've said 'no tears' all week long," remarked designer Michael Moloney, "but we'll make an exception for happy tears." Yeah. Tears of joy are okay.

Not only does this new house mean excelerated taxes and costs for utilities, etc for this family, who couldn't even afford to do any repairs to their old house, but it also causes higher taxes for their neighbors because of the value of the house in the neighborhood! I don't think their neighbors will appreciate it!

I have wondered how these families are chosen. I admit there are a few that have really needed a new home, BUT, there are several of these homes for sale because the family can't pay the bills related to the home. The last program I watched was a couple of years ago when the program found a couple in West Virginia who needed a new home. It was bad. That couple lived in a "habitat for humanity" home that they and their kids had torn up. The parents were living off of welfare. I was appalled. There are thousands of WV people who truly need help. I'm not whining just stating the programs monies that have been spent for one family could provide twenty homes to the low or no income families.

I wrote to them a couple years ago regarding my brother's family, theri son has MS and was in a wheel chair, never spoken, never eaten without a feeding tube, they are so poor, live day to day,the family tries to help out as much as possible. I even taped a picture of him to the outside envelope, never heard one word from them...so how do they choose ??? I sure would like to know, oh by the way they only have 2 children and they both work...imagine that.....

I agree with most of you, while the family may be deserving how will they pay for the upkeep of such a home...and did you notice the mother and all the girls had manicures...

I know a family who needs this done for them, but they are not minority or handicapped, or have some kind of terminal illness. Too bad those are the requirements for this show. I fear this show has become politically correct...don't watch it anymore. I don't watch a lot of things on tv anymore. Too many lies and deceipt on national news programs.

I think it's absolutely cruel for "EM" to do this, to these deserving families. None of us who are even middle income people would be able to pay the taxes, heating and everything else that goes with these luxurious homes. Why can't they build them beautiful, but smaller homes, wirh six bedrooms if they need them, but without all the grandeur. Then, these people would be able to try and live with less stress wondering where the next buck will come to pay the bills.

"EM" doesn't really care for the people, in the long run. If they did they would think of them, instead of how they themselves look on TV. They have wonderful businesses who volunteer to help with the building and furnishings, which make a big difference. If the house was made simplier, they would still look good and the families would be happier, knowing that they might be able to keep the home.

Talk about Bling! The house is totally dum for what these people actually needed. They are just making it harder for the owners at tax time., unless the comedians pitch in and pay their taxes every year. Whos wants a runway going down the hall in a house? Some day that will have to go. I hope it will be easily removed when they no longer want this eye sore. To me that ruined the look of the house inside. I guess if they liked goats, they would of put them up in one of the rooms also..lol This isent a house, its a total dream disaster waiting to go sour.$$$$$$$$ Bling $$$$$

I stopped watching this show because I got tired of all the screaming and falling to the ground when "the bus driver moved that bus"
