Chelsea Handler to Star in New Comedy Series for E!
Is Chelsea Handler the new Larry David? Or the new Larry Sanders? Is E! taking on HBO at their own game?
'Variety' reports that E!'s late night talk show host, Chelsea Handler, is to star in her own comedy series, 'After Lately,' a half-hour (semi-)scripted comedy that will examine the backstage goings on at her talk show. It sounds a lot like 'The Larry Sanders Show' meets 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'
Handler described it as "a behind-the-scenes look at what happens at our office when the cameras are off. ... A perfect platform for people who have no business being on camera."
The new show will be in a similar vein to the backstage shenanigans of the fictional talk show host and show in HBO's '90s satire, 'The Larry Sanders Show.' And it's also bound to draw comparisons with Larry David's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' as the actors will work more from story outlines than from fully developed scripts, an improv technique perfected by the cast of 'Curb.
E! has ordered eight episodes of 'After Lately' and production is slated to begin in a few weeks' time. It will be produced by Handler's own company, Borderline Amazing Prods, and co-creators Handler, Tom Brunelle and Tom Wollack have been named as executive producers.
Others set to appear in the show include 'Chelsea Lately' regulars Guy Branum, Sarah Colonna, Heather McDonald and Chris Franjola. There's been no word yet on whether any of Handler's celebrity late night guests will be making cameo appearances.
"Chelsea Lately' airs weeknights, 11PM ET on E!
