Nick Swardson on Gay Robot, Twitter Meltdowns and That Nice Girl, Heidi Montag

by Kim Potts, posted Oct 12th 2010 2:20PM
Nick Swardson's Pretend TimeTrust me, after you watch the premiere of 'Nick Swardson's Pretend Time' (Tues., Oct. 12, 10PM ET on Comedy Central), the 'Wheelchair Cat' theme song and the phrase "powdered donuts make me go nuts" are going to be stuck in your head.

Swardson, of stand-up comedy and movie fame ('Blades of Glory,' 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,' 'You Don't Mess with the Zohan' and 'Benchwarmers'), also finally brings Gay Robot to the tube as a recurring character on the seven-episode first season of 'Pretend Time.' We'll also meet Wheelchair Cat (the feline who's living on a trust fund) and Garry Gaga, Lady Gaga's policeman brother who shares a sense of style with the pop star.

Swardson, who's best known to TV fans as 'Reno 911!''s roller-skatin', short-shorts-wearin' gay prostitute Terry Bernardino, talked to AOL TV about 'Pretend Time,' his thriving movie career (and upcoming co-star Heidi Montag), why we're not likely to find him on Twitter anytime soon and the origins of Terry, one of the greatest TV characters of all time.

Nick SwardsonHi, Nick! So, I just got to watch the first couple of episodes. I love them.
Do you really? You can tell me if you don't.

No, no, I really do. It's good to finally see Gay Robot on TV, and the segues between sketches are really cool, too.
Oh, cool, thanks. Yeah, that's what really intrigued me about the show. I didn't want to do another show that had, like, a standard format, a comedian coming out and doing standup, and then introducing sketches, just because that format had been done so much. So it was that format, or the segues, transitions and stuff, that's what I thought was cool about this show and kind of different.

It definitely sets it apart from every other sketch show.
Yeah, there have been so many. I just did a promo with Daniel Tosh, kind of making fun of that, where there's just been so many sketch shows. So it's like, yeah, how do you do a new one? And we have a different kind of transition, and, obviously, my juvenile mind.

You're very busy with your movie career ... why did you decide to do a sketch comedy series now?
Yeah, everybody was kind of baffled about that -- my agent, the managers -- but it's just always been a passion of mine. I've always, always loved sketch comedy. I grew up on it. I grew up watching 'Saturday Night Live.' I've just been such a fan for my whole life, and for some reason it just felt like we had a window to do it, and I wanted to give it a try. It just felt right, and I was so hungry to do it.

And unlike with movies, it must be nice to get that chance to do new things every week: new characters, tackling new subjects, right?
Yeah, and also, just having that control. You know what I mean? Like, being able to control all of it. And I've always been sketch-minded. Even in my stand-up, if you watched some of my stories and jokes, they're very sketch-like. I've done stand up for 15 years, and I just ... I was just having trouble writing jokes. But when I started writing sketches, it just came. It was like the floodgates just opened up. It took over my mind, so it was really kind of fresh and exciting for me, creatively.

You mentioned 'Saturday Night Live' ... did you ever audition for the show? Or is that something you ever wanted to do?
I did for a while, but then I was too young. When they first looked at me, I was like 21. And then I moved to L.A. and then I started working with [Adam] Sandler, and then we started doing movies. It got to a point where I didn't want to move back to New York and just kind of start over at 'SNL,' and I would have had to find a voice there, when Adam was kind of helping me find a voice already. But yeah, I've always loved 'Saturday Night Live.' They have such a talented cast right now. Those guys are great.

In 'Pretend Time,' we finally get to see Gay Robot on TV regularly. I assume it's going to be a recurring sketch?
Yeah, it's every week. I can't believe it. Gay Robot lives!

Gay RobotThere have been so many rumors over the years about Gay Robot -- that it was going to be a Comedy Central series, that it was going to be an animated show. Why did it take so long to get him and frat boy friends on the air?
Well, we made a live-action pilot, and they tested it for a group of young guys, and they all laughed, but they were all afraid to say they liked it, I think, because it was gay. [Laughs] And then we decided to go animated, and then that was OK, but [the audience] didn't love that. And so, we were just trying to figure out what to do with it, and when we decided to do the sketch show, we were like, oh, we'll do the animated segments every week. And then my buddy Tom [Gianas], who directed the original 'Gay Robot' pilots, was like, 'Wait, what if we do it live-action every week? Let's do a live-action sketch.' So it's almost like the perfect scenario, because it's just great little doses of Gay Robot, and the pilot was really kind of arduous to shoot, because the Gay Robot takes like four guys to work it ... no pun intended. It takes, literally, like four handlers to work all the parts. Again, no pun intended.

It works really well live-action, and as a sketch.
[Laughs] Yeah, I'm glad that it's not animated, because it is a whole different thing live-action. It's so funny, because I've had gay guys come up to me and say, like, 'You know, it's really offensive.' I'm like, 'No, it's not!' The intention of Gay Robot was never to be ... it's supposed to be positive. Like, he's a guy that gets along with everybody. When we did the pilot, he was a member of a fraternity, and they all loved him. You know what I mean? He was like one of the guys. That was always the angle of 'Gay Robot.' It was never supposed to be making fun or anything.

That's definitely the vibe the first time we see Gay Robot in 'Pretend Time,' when he's interacting with Ryan Phillippe ...
Yeah, that was amazing. It was amazing to get Ryan for the show. I met him at a party years ago, and he said he was a huge 'Gay Robot' fan. So when we got the show, and we were thinking of sketches, I remembered, and I called his agent, and I was like, 'Dude, Ryan's a fan. I wonder if he'd want to do this?' And his agent was kind of like, 'Um, I don't know. I don't think so.' He just was kind of trying to shove it off to the side, but he called Ryan, and then his agent just immediately called me back and said, 'Ryan's in.' Like, Ryan was just like totally on board. He was awesome. He's such a great dude.

Will we see any other guest stars -- maybe Adam Sandler -- in the first season?
Honestly, there aren't a lot. Bob Odenkirk guest stars, and he is, you know, amazing. He's such an influence on me sketch-wise. I didn't ask Sandler or anybody like that, because I just didn't ... I really wanted to do it, but I didn't want to take people out of the sketches, and be like, 'Oh, I'm just one of those douchebags that's friends with all these famous guys.' I wanted people to appreciate the sketch for what it was and not be taken out of it. Obviously, Adam's amazing, and if he wanted to do it, he could, of course. But his schedule is so busy, and also, I wanted to find young people that [viewers] didn't know about. More like kind of helping break really funny people -- I really want to give those people a voice. It's more important to me than having a friend who's really rich and successful come in and do a bit.

This is your pay-it-forward move after Sandler worked with you earlier in your career?
Yeah, I mean a lot of people really -- obviously Adam, and even like Bob Odenkirk and guys like that -- a lot of people were really great to me. But I've never had an ego. So I really want people who are funny to be funny. I really support that, and it's hard to get on the air, and it's hard to get involved in stuff. So if I can help people out, and help [viewers] discover people, that's amazing to me.

You're back on Comedy Central after very successful stand-up shows and, of course, playing Terry on 'Reno 911!,' who is one of my most favorite TV characters ever. Did the 'Reno' guys create the character for you, or was he your creation?
Oh, thanks! Yeah, I created all of Terry. ['Reno 911!' creators] Tom [Lennon] and Ben [Garant] were friends of mine from New York. It had been a pilot for Fox previous to Comedy Central, so it kind of had this second life. And Tom and Ben, those guys have been through the ringer on so many shows, so they didn't think it was going to be a hit. They were like, 'Look, we have this show, we're going to do one season, it'll probably get canceled, so let's just make it crazy ... let's just do whatever the f**k we want.' So they were like, 'Just think of any kind of character that the police would come and arrest.' So I was like, 'OK, what if I'm a prostitute?' And then I'm like, 'Well, what if I'm gay, but I don't think I'm gay, but I'm obviously gay?' And then I got a free set of roller skates at a party. So I was like, 'What if I'm on f**king roller skates? I'm standing on the street corner. I'm the f**king gayest dude ever. I just say that I have a girlfriend, but I'm always doing really obvious gay sh*t, but I never own up to it.' So we just thought it was super funny, and we shot it, and then six years later, and a movie, it's like the craziest thing ever. I really miss playing Terry. I didn't think I would, but he's just so much fun. It was so liberating just to do something where there was no script. It was 100 percent improvised. And it was crazy. We used to crack up all the time when we were filming. It was such a fun gig.

Terry is still beloved. There are all those little homages to him on YouTube, with Lionel Richie songs playing in the background ...
[Laughs] I know, Terry does still have a lot of fans. I loved doing it. I'm sure I'll never get to do anything like that again. I had actually thought about spinning off a Terry show, but I don't think I will anymore.

I was just going to ask you if he might pop up in anything else again ...
I don't know. I mean, maybe he would in a sketch, like in the background. But the great thing about ['Reno 911!'] was playing off Tom and Ben and that great cast. But I did think maybe Terry could have his own detective agency, like his own TV show. I think it could be funny, but then, the last thing I want to do is overstay Terry's welcome. He had such a good run.

Tell me about your upcoming movie comedy 'Born to Be a Star,' which you co-wrote. You're playing an aspiring porn star?
[Laughs] Yes, I play a bag boy in a supermarket in Iowa. I have a bowl cut, buckteeth and I'm really naive, almost Napoleon Dynamite-esque. And I stumble upon a porno at my friend's house, he plays this porno. We've never seen one before, and it turns out it's my parents from the 1970s, in the porno. So I'm like, 'Oh, my God, those are my parents!' And I decide that's my calling, so I go to L.A. to be a movie star. I don't see it as like, pornography, bad. I just see it as, oh, my parents are in a movie, I want to be in that family business. So it's fish out of water, almost like 'Napoleon Dynamite.' meets 'Boogie Nights.'

It sounds great. Is it out this year, or next?
It comes out in April. And it is really great. Honestly, like, there's obviously some dirty moments, because it's pornography, but it's actually a really sweet story. When we tested it, it tested really high with girls, because it's a sweet story about this kid. It's not just pure filth, and it's got a great cast, like Christina Ricci and Stephen Dorff, Don Johnson, Kevin Nealon.

You're also in 'Just Go With It,' with Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman, and I just read something about how you steal the whole movie.
Oh, God, I don't know if that's true. But I play Adam Sandler's cousin, who then becomes Jennifer Aniston's fake boyfriend. It's a crazy concept, but a really fun, cool, original romantic comedy.

I also read something recently about you defending Heidi Montag, who has a cameo in the movie. What happened there?
Yeah, all these people were being so mean. Online and stuff, and talking to me, they were like 'Heidi Montag's in this movie, I'm not going to see it!' Like, 'I hate her, what a pig.' And I don't know 'The Hills' that well. I'm not familiar with her whole thing. But like, she was so f**king nice and really sweet. She came to the set, she did a couple of days and she was really nice and humble. She was not bitchy at all, and was so excited to be there. So I just couldn't believe that she was just doing this cameo and people were hitting on her that hard.

Do you have scenes with her in the movie?
I do, actually. Me and Sandler and Kevin Nealon have a scene with her, and then she's got another scene with Adam and Kevin.

You're not a 'Hills' watcher, but do you watch other reality TV? Any favorite TV shows?
I don't really watch a lot of TV. There's some stuff I watch. I mostly just download episodes on iTunes. I watch 'Mad Men.' I watch 'Eastbound and Down.' I think those are the two best shows on TV, honestly. But yeah, otherwise, I'm not a big homebody. And if the TV is on, I'm usually playing videogames.

You're also, unlike a lot of your fellow comedians, not on Twitter ... why not?
No, I'm not. I just don't feel... like, any funny idea I have, I'd want to put it into my work. I want to put it into a sketch or put it into a movie. I spend so much time -- I'm such a big sports fan -- so it would all just be me ranting about sports or me being wasted. And I just don't need that in my life. I don't need to be like, because I drink and stuff, and it's like, I don't need to be drunk rambling on Twitter. You know what I mean? There's just so many celebrities who are already, who look so ridiculous, because they get f**ked up and Tweet all this meltdown sh*t. [Laughs] I have nothing against people who do it, but it's just not really my thing. I just kind of like being inside my own head. I don't need other people in my head with me.
