Could Charlaine Harris' Harper Connelly Book Series Become the Next 'True Blood'?

Charlaine HarrisAfter the mega-success of HBO's 'True Blood,' based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by author Charlaine Harris, it's no surprise that another network would try to duplicate that formula for ratings victory.

Variety reports that CBS is developing a new show, called 'Grave Sight,' based on Harris' Harper Connelly mystery series. For added pedigree, Ridley Scott and Tony Scott are aboard as executive producers, along with 'CSI' and 'Law & Order: SVU' alums.

The books follow a woman, Harper Connelly, who is able to hear and see the last moments of the dead after being struck by lightning as a teenager.

But is Harris' magic alone enough to make the new series a hit? The Scotts are behind 'The Good Wife,' which, in its second season, continues to be one of the most engrossing dramas on television. But one of the reasons 'True Blood' is so influential is because of Alan Ball's vision. Without a strong visionary calling the shots, 'Grave Sight' could turn out to be another generic, paranormal-tinged drama.

Then again, 'Ghost Whisperer' performed well for the network, running for five seasons before its cancellation in May, and it's not like that show was groundbreaking. If CBS is looking for a light, supernatural, female-fronted series to fill that gap in its schedule, 'Grave Sight' could be a safe bet.

I am currently reading the first book and it's a good read. It's more mystery and less of the supernatural elements that emboy True Blood. The mystery in the first book alone is gripping and is page-turning. Whilst it does not have the potential for the wit and sexiness of Alan Ball's True Blood, this could be an interesting TV show. I know I'll be giving it a go when it comes out :-)

This sounds too much like a rehashing of Medium and Ghost Whisperer. I'm tired of producers duplicating already successful ideas instead of coming up with something new.

I enjoyed the books, but I wonder how the TV show will handle Harper's romantic relationship with her "brother." They aren't related by blood, but they grew up together...Harris was definitely influenced by V.C. Andrews in this series.

The books are more like Supernatural than Ghostwhisper. Harper and her adoptive brother travel around looking for the missing dead bodies or the cause of death in some cases. They are consultants making money of the strange ability the lightning strike gave Harper. They are trying to remain in contact with their little brother and sister who live with adoptive parents who don't like Harper and her weird ability. They are also looking for their sister who disappeared years earlier.

If CBS keeps the show more Supernatural and less Ghostwhisperer the better it could be.
