On the 'DWTS' Scene: It's a No-Win Situation for Mike Sorrentino
Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino was voted off 'Dancing With the Stars' last night, but a situation kept him from talking to TV Squad on the post-show press line. The ejected celebrity had a neck injury and was being examined in his trailer by a doctor after taping. The 'Jersey Shore' star's fellow contestants and pro partner Karina Smirnoff weighed in on The Situation's four-week run on the reality competition series.
"After last night's performance [when we earned 28 out of 60 points], I totally thought it was going to be us," Smirnoff said. "The scores were low and the remarks weren't encouraging. It's okay. I had fun and I got to meet the real Mike."
"I think his time was cut a little too short," she continued. "He's OK . His cheek was starting to swell up because he had either [a] wisdom tooth [extracted or some kind of dental work.]"
The Situation proved to be a showman until the end by flexing his pecs before host Tom Bergeron announced Sorrentino was leaving.
"He was just trying to make light of a more dramatic situation," Smirnoff said. "Mike was upset [on Monday] because I promised him that the judges and the audience would appreciate the hard lifts he did [in our dance] because they were difficult. But the judges didn't, so I guess I wasn't telling him the truth! He was upset because he really put a lot on the line doing that dance. It is what it is. He improved from week one to week four. Hopefully, he'll keep on dancing."Would Smirnoff ever do an episode of 'Jersey Shore?' "I could be the drill sergeant who puts everyone in check," she chuckled. "I could do the 'GTD' -- gym, tan, dance!"
Rick Fox, for one, was surprised Sorrentino's supporters didn't keep him around. "He's not on the No. 1 cable show for nothing. He has a fan base. People watch that show," he said. "I can't think of an episode where I haven't been entertained by him. I know he put his heart into this. We saw how hard he was working. Unfortunately, it just caught up with him."
As for The Situation's tantrum in the confessional room, "I didn't know about the blow-up he had and the frustration on his part 'til we saw it on the show," said a supportive Rick Fox. "It's hard."
"He took it pretty hard," echoed Brandy Norwood. "That showed how much he cared and how he did his best. I feel badly for him."
Florence Henderson was sympathetic to The Situation's, well, situation. (It's kind of impossible to avoid using that word). She knows the euphoria of being called safe.
"It's such a relief you can't imagine," Henderson said. "Tonight was extremely difficult because Corky [Ballas] was so worried about [his son] Mark [Ballas] and Bristol [Palin.] Mark and Corky hugged each other. They have such a great relationship."
Henderson said there's no update yet on if the theme to 'The Brady Bunch' has been cleared so that she and Corky can dance to it next week on TV theme week. Might more of her TV children make appearances in the audience? "Chris [Knight, Peter] was here on Monday. I've gotten several text messages from Barry Williams [Greg.] He wrote, 'I'm so jealous of Corky Ballas.' [Barry and I] dated, you know."
One 'Brady' child who might not make it to a taping is Eve Plumb because she's in New York appearing in a play. (Perhaps Geri Reischl could come in her place?)
A knowing smile came over Henderson's face when TV Squad asked her if she had just two words of support for the ejected Sorrentino?
The former Carol Brady played along, replying, "Oh, Mike."
