Death by Twitter on 'Melissa & Joey' (VIDEO)

Death by Twitter on 'Melissa & Joey'From one point of view, Twitter is an amazing social networking tool -- the best way ever to reach out to the people around you. But from another point of view, Twitter is the worst thing to ever happen in the history of the world. The new episode of 'Melissa & Joey' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC Family) takes both sides of the debate.

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

Mel (Melissa Joan Hart) hears rumors about her niece Lennox. The gossip says that Lennox (Taylor Spreitler) is drinking, partying and generally behaving badly. Joey (Joey Lawrence) doesn't believe the rumors, but since Mel is a reformed party-girl herself, she doesn't trust her teenage niece. After winning Joey over to her point of view, Mel hacks into Lennox's email -- setting up the inevitable outbreak of Twitter-based revenge.

Lennox's emails confirm that she's a good girl, and not a partier. But Mel's invasion of privacy is exposed by an elderly guest, and Lennox is furious when she learns that Mel has read her emails. Next, Mel decides to violate her own privacy, as a way of making amends. As a form of apology, she tells Lennox her most embarrassing secret: She has a tattoo of a dude's name on her butt -- and she doesn't even remember who the guy is.

Which seems to resolve the whole issue. Or it would have, if Twitter hadn't been invented, and if Lennox wasn't still mad. One quick jump cut later, and Lennox has "tweeted" the tattoo info to millions of people. There's nothing left for Mel to do -- except put her head in her hands and start drinking. It's death -- well, social death -- by Twitter! The information revolution really cuts both ways here. It speeds up revenge, and efficiently screws up Mel's life.
