'The Deadliest Catch' Stars on Quitting the Show: "It Was Hell"

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 13th 2010 7:30AM
Crew of 'Time Bandit'King crab fishermen have been gathering in Alaska's Dutch harbor this week preparing to launch their boats Thursday night for the seventh season of Discovery's 'The Deadliest Catch.' Among them, the Hillstrand brothers, who've been mulling over recent tumultuous events.

The fishermen set off a firestorm when they quit the show in a contract dispute. The network sued, and fellow 'Deadliest Catch' star Capt. Sig Hansen quit in solidarity. Fans of the show wrote angry letters to the network and threatened to boycott future seasons. However, last week it was announced that the dispute had finally been resolved.

Speaking about it to Entertainment Weekly, Jonathan Hillstrand said "Emotionally, it was hell. ... We didn't want to be sued. We didn't want all the fans hating Discovery." He added that he and his brother "just want our lives back, sort of. ... We are glad to be back and we're glad that everyone is happier."

'The Deadliest Catch' is Discovery's most popular franchise and the controversy at one time looked like it could leave the show high and dry. However, the Hillstrands and Hansen have now signed on for another two years and will be setting sail with the rest of the king crab fishing fleet tomorrow night.

The brothers' new show, 'Hillstranded,' a series of specials they shot for Discovery, will reportedly air as planned in June 2011.

Although Hansen said that all the fishermen on the show "are brothers," the ruckus may have created divisions between the trio and the others. When asked about the controversy Capt. Keith Colburn said, "I'm going to take the fifth. ... There's enough animosity between the fishermen at times on stuff. I don't need to generate any more."

Keith should know as he was knocked on his butt for an alleged indiscretion. But I am among the legion of fans happy to see the trio with the most personality back aboard for two more seasons.
