Chris Matthews Tries to Figure Out Why the Obama Administration Thinks Mike Huckabee Will Be GOP Nominee in 2012 (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Oct 14th 2010 4:45PM
On 'Hardball With Chris Matthews' (weekdays, 5PM ET on MSNBC) Matthews and Howard Fineman discussed a New York Times report that the Obama White House expects Mike Huckabee to be the GOP nominee for president in 2012.

Neither Fineman or Matthews seemed particularly convinced that Huckabee would actually emerge from the primaries, so they tried to think of reasons why the Obama Administration would want people to think that he would.

"Huckabee is probably one of the people they are least afraid of," was Fineman's theory.

Matthews had a different take:

"My producers believe that the reason they are doing this is they are setting (Huckabee) up as the reasonable conservative, so when he fails. . . when someone wilder and crazier ( is nominated) they'll be able to say, 'It's too bad they didn't run a more reasonable man like Mike Huckabee.'"

Or maybe the White House is just trying to tweak notorious Huck-a-phobe Ann Coulter.
