'Dog Whisperer': Saving a Dog From Death (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 18th 2010 12:38AM
'Dog Whisperer': Saving a Dog From DeathCesar Millan is known as "the dog whisperer." But often, his technique focuses on reforming human behavior, rather than on the dogs themselves. On the new episode of 'Dog Whisperer' (Fri., 8PM ET on Nat Geo), Cesar meets Jaime Crossman and her dog Chloe, a Collie/Greyhound mixed-breed.

Jaime was warned of Chloe's behavior when she first got her pet. Chloe is extremely aggressive and attacks other dogs on sight. If she can't reach the other dog she takes out her frustration on her owner -- biting and nipping at Jaime's legs.

And speaking of "frustration," another animal trainer gave up on Chloe in despair. He called her a "genetic disaster" and recommended that she be put down. So the stakes are high. If Cesar can't reform Chloe, then she may be facing death.

Instead of criticizing the dog, Millan focuses on Jaime's "energy." He puts Chloe inside a caged yard -- and watches her attack another animal. Jaime tries desperately to separate the dogs. But her panicked efforts agitate her pet even more, increasing Chloe's aggression. "That's what created it ... it was the energy you gave," Cesar says, explaining that the Chloe is taking behavioral cues from her owner. Jaime is shocked to learn this. "It's me, it's not [Chloe,] it's me."

Will the pet, the owner and the trainer be able to work together ... and keep Chloe from being killed?

I've grown up around dogs all my life (family had breeding kennel), and have trained (without really knowing it) many dogs to behave. Some dogs may have aggressive personalities, but if you recognize this, you can control them by thinking like a dog. However, I think this lady cannot be trained and should not own a dog. She must be put down :)

Cesar did what needed to be done. He had to observe both the dog and owner interacting to see where the problem lay. He does this again and again, and usually the issue is with the humans who either treat their pets like they are little people, or foist their own fears and personality problems onto their animals. I have NEVER seen him enter into an animal behavior problem in which he could not successfully overcome the problem. Often in just minutes. If you watch his programs over time, you will come to appreciate just how special his gift is.

I'm about to get flamed here... Milan is an idiot. His training methods are outdated and ridiculous. He claims to be the cat's pajamas when it comes to training, but seriously, the first time I saw him choke a Miniature Pinscher into submission, I lost all respect I would ever have for this man. How many times has he been sued for dogs being injured in his care? What professional training does he have? He is completely unqualified to train anything, in my honest opinion. I'm not saying that you absolutely have to go to training school to be qualified, but do some research! I trained all of my dogs myself with a couple of books on how to do it, and I constantly get comments about how incredibly well-behaved they are. They sit when told, they lay down, they stop barking on command, they're off-leash trained... These are basic things, it's nothing special! But when Cesar Milan does it "Oh, he is so amazing!" No, he really isn't. His completely false "research" on wolf behavior is asinine. Talk to a wolf expert sometime; Milan has no clue what he's talking about. Him and his ridiculous "methods" have done nothing but set training back by decades. I have not seen one person who has trained their dog using his methods that hasn't either given up on the dog or found a better trainer. Get him off the air before he ruins another dog's life!

How stupid is this man? He WATCHED the dog attack another dog and allowed the owner to put herself into a dangerous situation to separate the dogs. Is he INSANE? This man needs to stop training dogs. His methods are cruel and dangerous to him and the animal. They are extremely outdated and there are other methods that have been shown to work better.

Leila you have no clue what your talking about. I have a great deal of respect for him. Everyone from sister and brothers to adult children use his techniques. I learned by lifting my nervous dogs collar that she will follow me on lead, before I couldn't get her out the gate. Also one day a pitbull was stalking me (my neighbors dog) I looked straight ahead, tried to calm myself and walked past the dog. That might not seem like a big deal to you but I'm terrified of pitbulls and instead of freaking out and running away I stood my ground..maybe I just got lucky that day but I think it was because of Cesar Milan.

You are blessed Cesar to have this special gift. I watch you often as I have a fear aggressive female Shepard mixed whom I love dearly. I can't have her nails trimmed or board her because she is so aggressive and fearful. I have to crate her or put her out in the yard when someone visits. I tried many different methods even having a trainer come in but she is right back where she started so we just take it day by day but it's sad for her.

I have so much respect for Cesar - he helped us learn how to retrain us so we could train our very active German Shorthairs - now happy dogs, happy Mom and Dad! Thank you Cesar!
