'The Amazing Race' Season 17, Episode 4 Recap

by Jackie Schnoop, posted Oct 18th 2010 7:00AM
It's off to the Arctic Circle for the teams!['The Amazing Race' - 'We Should Have Brought Gloves and Butt Pads']

Ice, ice baby. The teams went from the extreme heat of Ghana to the Arctic Circle for this leg. Sure, it's a drastic change of cultures. But they might find themselves wishing for just a bit of heat once again.

They should have realized that you always need to be careful what you wish for. And, on 'The Amazing Race' you're never quite sure where you'll be and what challenges lie ahead. I don't know about "butt pads" but gloves are always a good idea.

The teams left the African heat and zipped off to Sweden. While they all were scheduled for a particular flight, only some of the teams were bright enough to say, "Hey, maybe we can save time and get a different connecting flight!" One would think that this would be the standard tactic by now, but it's obviously not. Thankfully, my sentimental favorite team (who will probably not win) Michael and Kevin, thought of an earlier flight. They teamed up with Mallory and Gary, then went for it.

Nope, it wasn't long before others saw the same light bulb go on and filled that flight, blocking remaining teams including the one who left the Pit Stop first -- Jonathan and Connor. With a Speed Bump ahead, Kevin and Michael needed the time, or not so much as the case turned out to be. Their Speed Bump, while uncomfortable, was a relatively easy task -- sit on ice furniture in the Ice Hotel for ten minutes.

Although it was the off-season for sled dogs in Sweden, they still have to keep in shape. This may have been one of the most popular ever challenges not on a zip line since the first season. Every single person who did the sledding Roadblock seemed to be thrilled, even Mallory who missed a flag and had to do a penalty lap. Hmmm ... maybe she missed it just so she could run the dogs again!

Then came the Detour. They had a choice of Sleds or Beds. Thinking of his father's health, Michael and Kevin immediately chose the Bed task -- making a shelter with a fire and bedding to the standards set by the locals. The others all clamored over Sleds. Only slightly akin to miniature snowmobiles, the Techsleds were supposed to be easier to control due to a lower center of gravity as the racers knelt on them.

I don't think I've ever laughed so much during a Roadblock. Perhaps I'm a sadist, I don't know. But those crashes were hilarious! As long as no one was seriously hurt, not even slightly hurt, it was a hoot! True, Stephanie had a really hard time of it and Chad returned to his pushy domineering self as she whimpered that she couldn't do it. In contrast, Jonathan also couldn't do the sledding, but Connor reacted totally differently about the situation saying, "If you can't do it, you can't do it." As teams crashed and burned (figuratively, not literally), they headed off to the Beds task.

Well, all except Jill and Thomas, that is. They just wandered around lost for the longest time. Thomas really wanted to hold out on using that Express Pass they won in the first leg of the show. However, time was working against them. They finally found the Beds challenge, then skipped ahead. I think they made the right choice, don't you? It's no sense coming in last while holding the pass. It would be like being voted off 'Survivor' with the hidden immunity idol in your pocket.

It seemed like Nat and Kat hit that welcome mat at the Pit Stop with a huge lead on the other teams, not long over halfway through the show. Kevin and Michael, despite their speed bump, made it to fourth place. The end race was between the Jersey Girls (Katie and Rachel) and the Jersey Boys (Princeton boys Connor and Jonathan). Editing surely made things seem tighter than they were as the singing lads were Philiminated on the day of their Princeton graduation.

Yes, they were hokey at times with the singing. But they'll be missed. They never got short with each other, they charmed taxi drivers and got along well with the other teams. At least their exit wasn't because they stopped to help another team. Unfortunately, they were just too slow all on their own. They went out with class and should make their families proud ... although they're sure to get razzed by their classmates over a few things.

'The Amazing Race' airs Sun., 8PM ET on CBS.

Were Jill and Thomas right in using the Express Pass?
No, they would have made it without it.88 (22.5%)
Yes, why gamble? They were likely to come in last.303 (77.5%)

Sorry Sassy, the oldes person to get to the final if I remember correctly, is the insidious deaf guy's mother (can't remember their name). I think all the other finalists were younger than 40.

I caught this episode on www.mytvworld.com the other day and I had a lot of fun watching it. I usually don't like the first episodes because the fighting teams haven't been eliminated. This one was well edited and had barelly any fighting in it. Too bad about the accapella boys though. I thought they were funny.

I love the vulnerability that the writers allowed Don to show to Megan as he proposed.http://www.hermeselling.com

I loved watching people enjoy those sled rides with the dogs. Didn't it look like great fun?

Can't wait for Chad to get some of his own medicine. He's an Abuser and Stephanie should leave him in the dust, IMHO.

I would love to see either parent/child combination win this!

Couchtime With Jill

This was a great episode! I keep waiting for the Volleyball girls to bring their A-game, but I'm starting to think they just haven't got one. They're young, strong and seem smart but they're always at the bottom of the pack. I really like Gary and Mallory. Check out my full review at www.couchtimewithjill.com

I think they chose wisely by using their Expresss Pass, however, in reality, they didn't need to do it. I think they did the right thing, in that they didn't know others would later switch to the Bed task, but others, many others, did switch... So, yeah, I think they did the right thing in terms of the information they had, but would it have worked out anyway? Yeah.

I wasn't too sad to see the singers go home - their schtick got old quickly.

As for who I'd like to see go next? Jill/Thomas and Chad/Stephanie - I can't stand watching the dating couples fight!

I'm rooting for the parent/child teams (Michael/Kevin, Mallory/Gary) and the girl/girl teams (Home Shopping ladies, volleyball players, doctors)!
