'The Middle': Welcome to America! (VIDEO)

'The Middle': Welcome to America! If what you really want is a pet, then you shouldn't get a human being. Animals are fluffier, after all. Plus, you don't really have to talk to animals so much. It's a win-win all around.

On 'The Middle' (Wed., 8PM ET on ABC), youngest son Brick Heck (Atticus Shaffer) really wants a dog. But his mother Frankie (Patricia Heaton) decides to go in a different direction. She adopts a Japanese exchange student instead.

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

The Heck family arrives at the airport, excited and waving miniature flags. But they're failing to see their new guest as an actual person. Frankie makes a speech to exchange student Takayuki -- then the kids bicker over who gets to sit next to him during the car ride home. "He's mine," Brick concludes. Dude, he's still not a dog, no matter how much you want him to be one!

The family quickly falls out of love with Takayuki, but he's not that excited by them either. "We are your family!" Frankie gushes to him. " ... Okay," is the student's halfhearted reply. So Frankie tries again. "We're gonna show you America!" she says. Quick jump-cut to ... everyone slouched in a catatonic trance in front of the TV, surrounded by fast food containers. Takayuki is unimpressed. Can the now-extended family make this work?
