Watch the Trailer for MTV's American Version of 'Skins'

by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 21st 2010 6:00PM
'Skins'Though it worked for 'The Office,' there have been about a gajillion ill-advised American remakes of famous British TV shows that don't fare so well. The occasional gem will shine through, like the aforementioned 'Office' or January's promising-looking 'Shameless,' but others, like 2003's 'Coupling,' bomb worse than Bill O'Reilly on 'The View.'

As for MTV's upcoming remake of the gritty teen drama 'Skins,' well, it's up in the air. The footage seems to be from the first episode, which follows the plot of the U.K. version nearly exactly -- though thankfully they didn't use the same exact script. (British humor doesn't always translate when delivered in an American accent.) But will it go the way of 'The Office' or of 'Coupling'? Watch the new trailer and judge for yourself.

What do you think of the trailer?

This is ridiculous. They even use the exact same lines as the British version. Honestly, can US writers not think of anything original anymore? I will give the US version a shot but I believe, as always, the original British version will be a million times better than the US copy.

The "Cassie" character they cast doesn't seem quirky enough. She actually sounds pretty sane.

Did they change Maxxie into a girl? I guess that school trip will be a little less shocking.

This doesn't give me a US vibe at all. Who wants to watch the exact script over again with different characters? God help me I do... Damn.

Um, I've watched three series of "Skins" and enjoyed them...how is it that this is an Americanized version of the British show, yet almost every scene in the trailer looks like a shot for shot clone? Couldn't MTV just air the original?

Just proves that the Brits know how to do TV.

Why in the world do they keep doing this? The office was a fluke. I got into Skins a while back, and really admire it for being the edgy teen drama that it is. I can't imagine that the MTV version won't be significantly watered down garbage.

Dear US television producers:
STOP IT! Get your own ideas, please!

Rubbish....and this is coming from an American. The UK version was classic, and this will not last a season. Had it gone to HBO or some other premium channel, then maybe. You cant be edgy on MTV. They had a show called undressed a few years ago, and it pales in comparison to skins. SMH.
