Jamie Lee Curtis Felt More Like a Fan of Her Father, Tony Curtis, Than a Daughter (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 22nd 2010 3:12PM
Jamie Lee Curtis, 'The Talk'Most of us have some ideas about fatherhood, and we're told that fathers play an important role and that they should be involved in their kids lives. And yet, on 'The Talk' (Weekdays, syndicated on CBS), Jamie Lee Curtis talked candidly about her own famous father's lack of involvement in her life. Perhaps even more surprising, she didn't seem particularly bothered by it.

She also described Tony Curtis as a fiction her father created. "This is a guy ... was in the Navy. ... He was a guy from the streets of New York and he became this other thing. He changed his name and he changed his whole life. And the invention of Tony Curtis was his life."

Jamie Lee also indicated, though, that Tony had no interest in fatherhood, and that he made this very clear early on. "He did what he was supposed to do from a financial standpoint," she admitted. "Which was honorable of him to do, but he was not an involved father. And therefore I look at him much more from the perspective of being like all of you, a fan of him."

When asked if she felt any sort of bond to him, she vehemently repeated, "Not at all!" It was a strange conversation, in stark contrast to those people who lament the lack of involvement from key people in their lives, but then again, growing up in the lights of Hollywood is very different than most of us can imagine.

I get that Jamie Lee Curtis didn't have a stellar relationship with her father but I find it interesting how she spoke on this clip. It was almost like she had to justify being almost like a fan with her father. I get not having a good relationship but still, a person has passed and in my opinion, it looks as though from this clip she is over it and it hasn't affected her. I know everyone grieves differently but it doesn't even look like she's sad.

I don't understand why you don't get it. Jamie Lee is very up front that she and her father had virtually "no" relationship. And that was her father's choice. Still, she obviously admired his work in movies and how he made himself into the star that he bacame. She felt no animosity towards him. She felt more like a "fan." Why SHOULD she mourn him any more that you or I? Jamie Lee's attitude is admirable. Also, she's one of the more genuine actors. Very pretty and gorgeous figure for her age. I love how she doesn't even bother coloring her hair. I'm betting that she's not one for all the cosmetic surgery, swollen lips, and frozen faces like 99% of the actors in LA LA LAND!

I used to like Jamie Lee Curtis until I read a comment of hers a few years back. She said they she believed that cigarette smokers should not be allowed any type of medical insurance because they endanger their health everyday voluntarly. I myself am a non-smoker but I believe they need health insurance like everybody else. I wonder if she allowed herself insurance when she became addicted to drugs and alcohol "voluntarly"? The only reason I read this article is because I was always a fan of Tony Curtis

I cannot stand Jamie Lee Curtis, and cannot for the life of me understand why her horseface is everywhere I look. She has no claim to fame. She is not pretty or talented. Writes mindless children's books, that any eleven year old could write just as well. She is mean and hateful, and wrote terrible and unnecessary digs at her mother, and now she is doing the same thing to her father. She should keep that enormous mouth of her's shut, and just go away. Who the heck cares a whit about Jamie Lee Curtis? I certainly don't. She should take that horse face, and those huge sagging boobs, and keep them behind a closed door.

I gather you don't like JLC. Does your opinion stem from her not being a good actress because she has a "horseface" (in your own words) or vice versa. You are a mean-spirited individual and feeling as you do you should be tetting your entertainment from Popular Mechanics or HGTV.

Tony, Janet and Jamie Lee all have been greatly talented actors. Tony foolishly deprived himself of some great moments by not being more involved in his daughter's life but she seems to have turned out okay in spite of that.

Jamie Lee is, by all accounts, a wonderful mother to her own children. Her children's books are much-loved additions to our library, and her fame does not seem to have gone to her head. Good for you,Ms. Curtis, and thanks for your writing!

I also found it refreshing that JLC recognizes that it was her dad's choice to be distant and not something she did. Unlike too many ppl who blame their parent(s) and their lack of love for their screwed up life. Accept it and move on. There's no time machine or do-overs. There are too many folk who shouldn't be parents anyway. I know one gal who has had 5 kid at a young age but her parents care for them. Why? She just loves babies, the prob is when they grow up that she loses interest. She's nutty and some women do have kids in the hope of keeping the guy around. So many wrong reasons. At least Mr. Curtis said it outright and probably said it in a way that JLC would not blame herself or her mom. Some folks are not parent material. Luckily for JLC she had a very good mom that made up the difference.

From what I have read, Jamie Lee Curtis's mother, Janet Leigh, was a loving, caring parent. Sometimes a very devoted and involved parent can make up for the lack of interest in the other parent. It seems to me that I also read, quite a long time ago, that Tony Curtis introduced his young daughter to pot smoking, as his way of interacting with his child. Kind of like Papa John Phillips and his daughter Michelle, but with a MUCH healthier outcome! Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee herself both deserve credit for the fine woman Jamie Lee is.

Talk about someone being judgemental. Who is this writer anyway ? Ms Curtis is one to be admired and not critized for "not lamenting" anything. Her biological father (and that obviously was all he was) decided not to have anythign to do with here so...She made the best of living her life and doign what is best for her. I for one find it refreshing that someone like Ms Curtis (or anyone for that matter) is not "lamenting", or crying or complaining or "blaming anyone in or out of her life for anything". She controlled her life and good for her for not "lamenting" her biological father's decision. Funny but never read or this writer ever coming donw on Mr Curtis for his decision to not be a "real father". Funny how that works huh!

I can totally relate to what Ms. Curtis said about her father. Not everyone is cut out to be a parent and my mother is one of those people. Being a mother isn't what drove her and gave her being. She was a good mother but it wasn't her heart and soul. Instead of lamenting this, folks need to embrace that perhaps their parents were good people who created a child together and let it go at this. Making men change diapers, etc. should be something that is voluntary because the guy wants to, not because it's the 'proper' thing to do. As for a woman not wanting to change diapers? Sorry, you have the store and can make your own hours so if you don't want to do the mundane with children, you need not have any.
