Tom Selleck Owns an Avocado Farm?! Plus: 8 Other Celebs Whose Side Jobs Should Become Reality Shows

by Kim Potts, posted Oct 24th 2010 5:00PM
Tom SelleckMusicians are designing clothes and making movies, actors and actresses are recording albums and writing books (and attending 87 different graduate schools, James Franco) and, of course, a certain rapper is performing serious home renovations on the DIY Network ('The Vanilla Ice Project,' Thursdays at 9PM ET).

But Vanilla Ice and company aren't the only celebs who've got cool side projects going, and he's not the only one who could inspire a TV show. Here, a few more celebs whose moonlighting works could lead to new reality TV series ...

Tom Selleck
Day job:
Leading the NYPD on the new cop/family drama 'Blue Bloods'
Side project: Raising some tasty avocados on his ranch in California. The actor, who also plants memorial trees on the ranch when famous pals like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Ronald Reagan pass away, grows 63 acres of avocados, and sells the cream of his crop every year. Bonus celeb avocado farmers: Jason Mraz, and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, who grows his avocados on a farm that shares a fence with Selleck's spread.
Possible show title: 'Green Acres With Tom Selleck'

Bruce Campbell
Day job: Being a horror movie legend and helping the little guy as retired spy Sam on 'Burn Notice'
Side project: Growing lavender on his farm in Oregon. The cult fave actor tells TV Squad that he grows an amount that's too small to process for profit, but what he does grow is processed into lavender oil, which he gifts to friends, family and 'Burn Notice' cast and crew every year. He also points out that he has to take the lavender to Northern California to have it distilled into oil ... "I take it to a facility owned by (actor-turned-cop/reality TV star) Steven Seagal," Campbell says. "I don't think he knows about it, though."
Possible show title: 'Lavender Farming With Bruce Campbell,' because, really, could there be a funnier, or more surreal, name for a TV show?

Kiefer sutherlandKiefer Sutherland
Day job:
Saving the world for eight seasons on '24,' and planning the upcoming '24' movie
Side project: Owning his own music label. For reals. Sutherland and his musician BFF Jude Cole (who had a Top 40 hit with 'Baby, It's Tonight') started Ironworks, an indie record label, in an old ironworks building in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. Among the label's artists: Lifehouse and Billy Boy on Poison.
Possible show title: Kiefer says he and Cole started the company as a way to help great unsigned bands break into the music business, which has us thinking Fox really missed an opportunity to keep the '24' star on the network as an 'American Idol' judge ... who wouldn't have tuned in every week to see Jack Bauer give feedback to the wannabes: "Damnit, Tim Urban, I told you last week you were pitchy!" Their loss, and ours. But it's not too late to get Kiefer back on the tube with some sort of musical series, so we'll go with a weekly series in which he tells us about the new musical acts we should be checking out, and we'll call it, 'Jack Bauer Saves the Music Industry, Too.'

Nick OffernanNick Offerman
Day job:
Scene stealer Ron Swanson on 'Parks and Recreation'
Side project: He builds boats! Seriously. He's a professional boat builder and wood craftsman, and he has even released an instructional DVD, 'Fine Woodstrip Canoe Building with Nick Offerman.' The actor, whose character built a canoe as a thank you gift on the show, even built pal Rainn Wilson's kitchen table.
Possible show title: Given he and wife, and frequent co-star, Megan Mullally's naughty sense of humor, 'Got Wood? With Nick Offerman.'

Teri HatcherTeri Hatcher
Day job:
'Desperate Housewives' diva
Side project: GetHatched.com, a "chick's guide to life." The lifestyle website, which Hatcher launched as part of the Disney Family.com site, features the usual service-y home, health, love, work and style advice, along with lots of celeb input from Hatcher pals like Eva Longoria and Bravo god Andy Cohen. GetHatched.com is similar to Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop.com, without Gwynie's snootiness.
Possible show title: It's tough to top that catchy web title, so if Hatcher ever decides to give Martha Stewart a run for her domestic doyenne money, 'Get Hatched With Teri' should definitely be the name of her show.

Daniel Day LewisDaniel Day-Lewis
Day job:
Oscar-winning star of 'There Will Be Blood' and 'My Left Foot'
Side project: In the late '90s, during some downtime from Hollywood, Day-Lewis spent a summer working with an Italian custom shoe designer, learning the craft of cobbling. Many people assumed the Method actor was preparing for a role, but he simply had become fascinated with the process of making shoes after purchasing a pair from Italian shoemaker Stefano Bemer.
Possible show title: 'My Left (and Right) Foot With Daniel Day-Lewis'

Kristin BauerKristin Bauer
Day job:
She's vampire and Fangtasia owner Pam on 'True Blood'
Side project: She's an artist who works under her married name, Kristin Bauer van Straten. She creates in pencil, charcoal, pastels and oil painting, has worked on commissioned projects and shows off her works on her official Website (which includes a cool sketch of co-star Alexander Skarsgard).
Possible show title: Haven't you missed the "happy little trees" guy, the late Bob Ross, and his 'Joy of Painting' show on PBS? 'True Blood' star Bauer could lead her own art instruction series: 'The True Joy of Painting.'

Kal PennKal Penn
Day job:
He's filming another 'Harold & Kumar' flick, 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.'
Side project: In 2008, as a visiting lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, he taught the courses "Images of Asian Americans in the Media" and "Contemporary American Teen Films," and in 2009, he quit his regular gig on 'House' to go to the White House, where he spent a year as the Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement for President Obama.
Possible show title: Penn's the perfect host for a TV show that would cover the ever-intersecting world of politics and pop culture/Hollywood ... 'A Harold & Kumar Political World'? Maybe not. How 'bout the simple, but alliterative, 'Penn on Politics'?

Mary Beth EvansMary Beth Evans
Day job:
She's best known for her long-running roles as Kayla on 'Days of Our Lives' and Sierra on 'As the World Turns.'
Side project: As TV Squad's Allison Waldman pointed out earlier this week, Evans' side gig is making delicious apple and pumpkin pies, which can be purchased during the holiday season at the Williams-Sonoma Website.
Possible show title: 'Days of Our Pies,' of course.

Sure.... These actors have, businesses. A thriving avocado farm . Flipping and renovating Houses, that sell for (uhumm....) 25.9 Million USD dollars. Does he need the money?. Where are the actors, who really work , I mean... Drive a cab p/t , Work as a cashier for maybe 10-11.00 hourly. The salaries that even some PHD educated people have to resort to today because of the economy . The die hard workers, who struggle just to make the mortgage payments. Imagine that!

How about combining "Jersey Shore" with Tom Selleck's avocado farm by letting Snooki take on all challengers in guacamole wrestling?
