TV Stars in Double Trouble on 'Dog Whisperer' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 25th 2010 12:03AM
TV Stars in Double Trouble on 'Dog Whisperer'Casey Anderson is the star of National Geographic's 'Expedition Wild' -- a show where he co-stars with an 800-pound grizzly bear. So you'd think he'd be used to dealing with wild beasts. But on the latest 'Dog Whisperer' (Fri., 8PM ET on Nat Geo), Casey has to deal with an entirely different type of animal -- his own two pet dogs.

Anderson and his wife -- actress Missi Pyle -- are having trouble with their two dogs: Dalmatian J.J. and Rottweiler mix Eleanor. If the canines are kept apart, then things are okay. But of course, J.J. and Ellie are always together -- and are always getting each other riled up. Casey can't handle it, so "dog whisperer" Cesar Millan comes in to help.

Whenever J.J. and Ellie go out for a walk, Ellie lunges at the other dogs passing by. This gets J.J. all excited, and soon the animals are totally out of hand. Now, Cesar faces the task of breaking up the dynamic duo ... of dogs. Will he succeed? Can he take control, even though a man whose best friend is a bear can't tame the pets?

Get some nail clippers. Pick up the leash and hook up one dog. Clip one nail. Unclip dog. Repeat until all dogs have had the experience perfectly connected. Now when you pick up the leash, you get a different reaction. If the old frantic behavior returns, go back to the leash + frantic behavior = nail clip. Done. This isn't brain surgery. As for the issue of two dogs walking together, halters have been around for about 7,000 years and fix this behavior in a matter of minutes. What? The dog doesn't like the halter? Tough. Spend the extra time walking around the back yard and stuffing treats in the dog's face to make the new sensations acceptable. A halter gives you mechanical advantage and allows you to associate lunging with suddenly looking into space. Meaning, as the dog lunges at another dog, you tighten the lead. The dog will jack knife and end up looking somewhere other than the original target. They hate that. You can fix over-arousal on leash in about 15 minutes. It doesn't make good TV because you don't get to prattle on about being the leader. Halters cost about $20 at any major pet store. Do not get a harness - that allows the dog to pull as hard as his body will allow. Harnesses are for plow horses and sled dogs.

Saving two dogs ? Were they in a burning house ? A car that went into a lake ? No , he very ably stepped in and taught another set of incompetents to communicate with their dogs . I hate headlines that are misleading but I still love Cesar.

Sorry I missed this particular "Dog Whisperer" as pre-walk crazies are a problem in this home. Even if the leads are touched or moved without intent of going for a walk, the gang (five dogs) go nuts. Once the walk gets underway everybodie's OK, but getting those leads on without mass hysteria is impossible. I'll have to keep an eye out for this show to see what Cesar did.

You know it wouldn't have made the show if he couldn't get the problem sorted out, now don't you?.. So why ask the question?
