Steven Slater Explains JetBlue Incident: 'Something Had to Give' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Oct 27th 2010 1:45PM
Steven Slater, the former JetBlue flight attendant who had an altercation with a passenger, then exited the plane via the emergency slide, said on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC) that he would probably behave differently if given the opportunity to relive that moment from August.

Slater described the incident as "one of those perfect storms of bad manners and incivility," but added that he would "probably not" make the same decisions again.

Slater, who said he's a recovering alcoholic, denied that he was drunk when he boarded the plane, but admitted that he had been drinking the night before. Slater also insisted that he didn't go to work that morning with the intention of creating a headline-grabbing spectacle. Instead, he said, he was simply "burned out" and "something had to give."

The former flight attendant also told his story on 'Larry King Live' (weekdays, 9PM on CNN) and said he didn't anticipate being arrested after the incident. "In all honesty, I knew there would be an internal issue with my former employer," Slater said. "[But] I didn't think beyond the moment. I didn't anticipate that."

And, Slater added that he was surprised to be elevated to folk hero status and didn't expect the amount of media attention that his exploits drew.
