Taylor Swift Shows Off Her Japanese Skills on 'Late Show' (VIDEO)
Singer Taylor Swift is a world traveler these days. And she's taking pains not to be an "ugly American" while touring in support of her new album. Recently, Swift traveled to countries like Italy, France and Japan. But as the singer told David Letterman on 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM on CBS), when she's in a foreign land, she makes an effort to speak the local lingo.Swift's efforts went so far as to include mastering enough Japanese to talk during an entire 90-minute concert. Dave couldn't believe Taylor knew that much Japanese: "No you don't!" But the young woman was blasé about the whole thing. "You just memorize some of it ... you figure out what it means."
When Letterman asked for examples, Taylor favored him with such phrases as "Nippon saikou," "Tanoshii, ne Osaka?" and "Kawaii!"* Pretty impressive!
All of the above won't be enough to carry Taylor through a whole conversation, but she's covered if she needs to say "Japan is awesome," "Are you having fun, Osaka?" and "Cute!" And if all else fails and Taylor is at a loss for words in Japan, she can always distract the crowd with her incredible singing voice.
(*Note: we did our best to transcribe Ms. Swift's phrases. Sadly, we're not as good at Japanese as the 20-year-old performer is.)
