Taylor Swift Shows Off Her Japanese Skills on 'Late Show' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 27th 2010 3:38AM
Taylor Swift Shows Off Her Japanese Skills on 'Late Show'Singer Taylor Swift is a world traveler these days. And she's taking pains not to be an "ugly American" while touring in support of her new album. Recently, Swift traveled to countries like Italy, France and Japan. But as the singer told David Letterman on 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM on CBS), when she's in a foreign land, she makes an effort to speak the local lingo.

Swift's efforts went so far as to include mastering enough Japanese to talk during an entire 90-minute concert. Dave couldn't believe Taylor knew that much Japanese: "No you don't!" But the young woman was blasé about the whole thing. "You just memorize some of it ... you figure out what it means."

When Letterman asked for examples, Taylor favored him with such phrases as "Nippon saikou," "Tanoshii, ne Osaka?" and "Kawaii!"* Pretty impressive!

All of the above won't be enough to carry Taylor through a whole conversation, but she's covered if she needs to say "Japan is awesome," "Are you having fun, Osaka?" and "Cute!" And if all else fails and Taylor is at a loss for words in Japan, she can always distract the crowd with her incredible singing voice.

(*Note: we did our best to transcribe Ms. Swift's phrases. Sadly, we're not as good at Japanese as the 20-year-old performer is.)

JBJG24M is right. The song American Ridehas a line that fits her to a 'T', that lie is ' got herself a record deal, can't even sing a note'. Taylor is good looking but not a beauty contestant, she appears to be very smart and has apleasant personality. Her people have marketed trhe hell out of her, BUT she still CAN'T SING.

Taylor Swift's demeanor and looks are too classy for many who are so used to the unwashed and no-class attitude of rappers and others who have no respect for anything.
Way to go, Taylor. Most of us appreciate you!!

Glad she found something she can do! Listen to her perform with no sound studio to adjust things and she is noooooooooooooooooo singer! I guess I could move to Japan where she can speak the language! Wonder if she can "sing" there?

She can't sing (and I know the difference) but she must have a he** of an agent. Also, the way she wears her hair makes her look goofy.

It takes forever to get to the point where you can read a newspaper or novel but the effort is really appreciated by the hosts when you are in a foreign country. Just making the effort wins you plenty of brownie points.
