Casting the 'Charlie's Angels' Reboot
ABC is moving forward with its 'Charlie's Angels' reboot after more than a year of development. According to Deadline Hollywood, the project has a script from 'Smallville' masterminds Al Gough and Miles Millar and will likely start filming in January. Gough, Millar, Leonard Goldberg, executive producer of the original series, Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen are all executive producing the pilot.
It's full steam ahead, but there's just one problem -- Charlie has no Angels. Well, there is no Charlie either. We'd like to fix that.
Televisionary has the casting breakdown and ABC is keen to get a multicultural set of actors. Let's give rumored casting director John Papsidera a hand, shall we?
Below, you'll find our picks for the new Angels.
Gabrielle Union as Kate PrinceWhy: Described in the casting breakdown as the most serious of the group, Kate Prince is an athletic ex-cop with a sharp mind. She's a master of the martial arts and a strict vegetarian, but she knows how to have a good time. Union has been attached to pilots that never took off, 'Angels' would be a great fit. The casting breakdown has an age range of 24-30, but at 37, Union could still pass for late 20s.
Alternate: Gugu Mbatha-Raw
With 'Undercovers' on the bubble, it'd be a shame to let this British beauty fade away in American audience's memories. Let her keep the accent, it'll add mystery to her character.
Kristen Bell as Abby SampsonWhy: The youngest of the three, Abby Sampson is described as having street skills despite her proper upbringing. She is the daughter of a Wall Street crook, has a quick wit with a great sense of humor and is an expert thief and con artist. The character is also an expert in Krav Maga. Bell had this role nailed the minute they said quick wit and a great sense of humor. While she's been getting big screen parts, Bell hasn't necessarily found the breakout film project she needs. TV viewers would welcome the 'Veronica Mars' actress back in a heartbeat. Again, a little over the age range of 22-27, but the actress could still pass for a college student.
Alternate: Stacy Keibler
The former wrestler can handle the physical aspects of the role in a heartbeat. She's a favorite of ABC ('What About Brian,' 'October Road') and deserves a starring role.
America Ferrera as Marisa Valdez Why: The Latina character, Marisa Valdez, is described as buff and with a knack for weapons. The character is an orphan and a former Marine, neat freak and video game nerd. America Ferrera can play nerd, just look at 'Ugly Betty' and 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. We'd love to see her kick some butt. Betty certainly gained confidence towards the end of the series and it'd be great to see Ferrera tackle in a different role.
Alternate: Nadine Velazquez
The veteran of 'My Name is Earl' and current star of 'The League' clearly knows how to be funny. She's the right age and certainly has the right look for be an Angel.
Kelsey Grammer as CharlieThe mysterious voice who is never seen, only heard. Audiences have come to love the voice of Kelsey Grammer, but would they be able to differentiate him from 'Frasier'?
Alternates: Malcolm McDowell, Kiefer Sutherland or Will Arnett.
Distinct voices all around.
James Wolk as BosleyA middle-aged man in the movies and series, ABC could sexy the character up and cast a younger fella, like 'Lone Star' actor James Wolk. Critics were smitten with this up-and-comer in 'Lone Star' and he handled the short-lived starring role well. A little sexual tension is always good for a show, so forget the love triangle, give us a love square.
Alternates: James Tupper or Jason Alexander
Tupper, an ABC favorite could take on a more fatherly figure role to the girls, but going that route so could 'Seinfeld' star Jason Alexander.
Tell us: Who would you cast in 'Charlie's Angels'?
