'Sanctuary' Season 3, Episode 3 Recap

['Sanctuary' - 'Bank Job']

The first two episodes of season three were pretty heavy on the dramatics. 'Kali Part 3' and 'Firewall' dealt with the aftermath of the Big Bertha incident and the repercussions of Will's death and resurrection, so it's no surprise that 'Sanctuary' needed a bit of a breather and what better way to breathe after the apocalypse than a bank robbery?

The premise sounded heavy, but it was actually more fun than you'd expect -- a little Bonnie, Bonnie and Clyde action. The Sanctuary gang traveled to a small town bank to recover an abnormal that was locked up in a safety deposit box, but when Magnus discovered that the egg had hatched and took a host, it was up to Kate to improvise.

But, the episode didn't play out like your everyday run-of-the-mill bank robbery, because as it turned out the gang had a little competition. One of the hostages was also after the hatched egg to sell on the abnormal black market and once the hold up got out of control there was a reverse hostage situation.

With 'Bank Job', the audience got a rest from the whole saving-the-world thing and we really got a chance to get to know the characters again. This was a Kate episode, and it was nice to see her taking the lead for a change. She came into her own and demonstrated what she's capable of .

There was a lot of controversy when the producers brought her in during season two to "replace" Ashley and the fans haven't been very welcoming. The season two episode, 'Penance', gave us a little information about her background before she joined the Sanctuary Network, but she's mostly been floating around in the peripheral, playing her role as the muscle in the group.

Magnus and Will relied heavily on her street-smart expertise to get them through the situation and she proved to be quite valuable to the team. When Magnus realized that the abnormal they were searching for had hatched and taken a host, Kate acted quickly to bring the situation under control -- well, almost under control.

Kate ran the show and Magnus let her. She really knew her way around a bank robbery: she handled the cops, dealt with the hostages, knew how long they had before the Feds swarmed the place, and even devised their escape. She organized the chaos and turned out to be the real hero of the day.

Will was mostly useless in this episode, but it wasn't that big of a deal since the past few episodes focused heavily on him. He jumped in every now and again to hack into the bank surveillance equipment or convert a smart phone into a retinal scanner, which detected the abnormal host.

But, the real magic happened in a very tacky 1970s era Winnebago. Henry maintained communications with Magnus while they were trapped inside the bank. Not only did he analyze the retinal images that Will relayed to him with his make-shift scanner, but he also developed a drug that caused the hatched abnormal to vacate the host before it burst out of him 'Alien' style.

In the end , Henry saved the day. Once the Feds got wind of the fact that the Sanctuary gang were talking to a person on the outside, they traced Magnus' calls and found the Winnebago. Henry managed to escape, and per Kate's suggestion, found a pretty wicked looking construction vehicle that he used to bash in the bank's vault wall. Just in time to save them and the abnormal from the competition.

Season 3 Observations and Quotations:

- It was great to see two 'Stargate SG-1' alumns in this episode: Special Agent Bruce Danner played by Peter Fleming and the bank teller played by Gary Jones.

- Amanda Tapping dropped the British accent for a couple of scenes. I'm not sure if it was intentional or by mistake, but it was a bit awkward. All of a sudden I had Samantha Carter flashbacks.

- Since when did Kate start calling Henry, Hank? Did I miss something?

- "A chopper with at 30-minute head start and radio silence. Oh, and, two tickets to the next Eddie Izzard concert." - Kate's demands to the cops.

- "Who's your daddy?!?!" - Henry to the gang after he knocked down the vault wall.

- "She's obviously crazy - just my type." - Will to Kate after she asked him about one of the hostages.

Sanctuary airs Fridays at 10PM ET on Syfy Channel.

I really wish they would have named Gary Jones's character Walter. That would have been awesome. :)

I was under the impression that the accent was dropped to fool the hostages a little bit. Not that it would've been hard to be spotted anyway, with a lack of masks and all.
