The Dog Whisperer Meets the Wolf-Dog! (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 1st 2010 12:15AM
The Dog Whisperer Meets the Wolf-Dog!We can handle dealing with dogs. Or at least, generally speaking, we can. But what if you met an animal ... that was something more than a dog? That's the issue for Cesar Millan on the latest 'Dog Whisperer' (Fri., 8PM ET on Nat Geo).

Recently, owners have been crossing regular dogs with wolves, to create a wolf-dog hybrid. This is not necessarily a good plan, and it's outside of the range of Cesar's expertise. So "dog whisperer" Millan brings in an outside expert -- wolf-dog master Jennifer McCarthy. Cesar and Jenny are trying to deal with Sofie, an adorable wolf-dog who has a little too much energy.

Sofie has a knack for escaping from her house, and destroying her owners' property. So Cesar comes up with a cunning plan: He'll just tire Sofie out, by making her run on a treadmill! But then Jennifer objects to his strategy. Will the two experts learn to agree, and be able to solve the curse ... of the wolf-dog?

1st off I agree w Cesarfan as any breedwhere the pup & small child grow up together the dog will always protect that child/adult over anyone.Pat it depends but alot of states u can own a mixture just not full breed wolf. & (FINALLY) For all the WOLF-CROSSBREED haters. What do you people think a Pure breed Husky is??? It is part wolf to began with. Lol Some people have no clue. It comes back to the (owner,Training,Treatment) Any breed can be mean/nice,Good or bad.Lmao

one reason i hold cesar in the highest esteem: he does NOT diss other trainers. he meets with them, he listens to them, he considers what they have to say, and if he doesn't agree, he agrees to disagree.

to my mind, if someone really is "all that", they shouldn't need to resort to mudslinging and backbiting to prove how great they are - results speak and if they have to use schoolyard tactics, then obviously their skills are not that great.

Its so interesting that like most other professions, there are a varity of methods used to reach similar goals. Many of which can legitimately be substituted for each other, if one is truly open minded enough to consider an alternative. Its interesting to see Cesar's reaction to the challange of his methodology. Simply put he indicated "it was an option". Once you look past the all opinions on methodology, one sees that the core principals are the same. Just like humans what works with one does not work with the other. Sheesh animal people are just as disagreeable as political people. How many times has Cesar stated that the owner is the largest part of most dogs problems. You can't fix one and not the other!!!

I am dismayed that breeding of dogs and wolves would become something people would do as a hobby. They are far more prone to bite; the wolf-side is impervious to the rabies vaccine; and we certainly do not need to "use" another group of animals for our pleasure.

There was a recent episode on "Fatal Attractions" about the wolf hybrid mix killing it's owner, apparently it was a ghastly sight as they mauled her to death. They initially attacked a friend of hers and it caused the owner to be afraid of them, but continued to be in the pen w/ them. The wolf expert said it right: when you mix dog and wolf together you are going backwards. Man actual did the opposite when he domesticated the wolf - he bred OUT the undesirable wolf traits and put in the more tamer dog traits. Man was actually trying to create a gentler, tamed dog - not a gentler wolf.

Not all states ban the wolf/dog hybrid mixes. Hawaii is one of them, but I think these states are a smaller group. Definitely Alaska allows it.

Sennen, I have trained dogs for many years also and you are obsolutely correct in what you posted. Threads mills can do more harm than good if you don't know what other problems your dog has. Eating properly, proper exercise and patience is what is needed. I also do not believe in crossing dogs with wolfs - you will end up with a breed that is unpredictable.

It is not against the law to breed them, but it can be against the law to own them. You have to check the local laws for your neighborhood and/or city. We actually have a man who owns a wolf-dog in my neighborhood, and no one has had problems with her - she's well behaved. Again, it just depends on local laws.

It -IS- illegal to own a wolf as a pet and you must have a special license to run a wolf sanctuary/rescue/rehabilitation - whatever you want to call it, and usually you are required to be a certain distance from populated areas.

Ok Miss Smartypants, don't dis Cesar. Cesar has helped more dogs and owners than you have ever known. Doesn't look like Jennifer is looking for respect, looks like she's looking for a set of coat tails to latch onto. Learn that from a dog too?

Treadmills are not lousy. What do you recommend when it's pouring out or 8ft of snow on the ground like in MD last winter? From what I have read of the dogs that died at his facility were not under his care. A man asked ceasar if he could use his facility with his own trainer. In any case, back to the subject of hybrids. I think that it is selfish of people to want these types of dogs just because you want something exotic. It's not fair to the dog part or the wolf part. And most people that do buy these animals can not handle them.

I have had dogs for 35 years, the people who have dogs and need someone else to train them for them, don't have time for a dog.Cesar is a good trainer,he takes time with the dog and works with the dog until the dog is train to do what needs to be done.
