Rescued Chilean Miner Edison Peña Sings Elvis, Dances on Letterman (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 5th 2010 4:20AM
Edison Peña was trapped underground for 69 days. He was one of 33 miners caught in the Chilean mine collapse. But he's free now, and he's talking advantage of his freedom. And if you were stuck in an enclosed space with 32 other men for two months, you might want to stretch your legs a little. ... Maybe even do a little dancing.

Peña appeared on the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), where he talked to David Letterman with the aid of an interpreter. Letterman asked Edison about surviving the mine collapse. Dave mentioned the use of music; he had heard that the miners sang as a group to keep their spirits up.

In response to this, Peña said he preferred to sing alone. But then, the miner showed that he wasn't so shy about performing -- even though he was in front of a huge audience.

Up until this point, the interview had been pretty laid-back ... Then Edison started singing the Elvis Presley song 'Suspicious Minds.' Peña is a huge Elvis fan, and will be visiting Graceland during his tour of the United States. So when Paul Shaffer kicked in with the music, Edison was suddenly overcome. He stood up and began "shaking it" to the beat. Even his interpreter started grooving in the background!

It was a hilarious and awesome performance. When the miner was done, Dave said this to him: "I kind of wanna hug you now!"

why can't the human race act HUMAN instead of trating people (WHATEVER RACE OR COLOR) with respect and dignity. The miner in question did not do anything to you for you to insult him- grow up.

Liking Letterman or not ( I happen to like him) has nothing to do with the joy, celebration and all around good feeling from Edison Pena's appearance on the show.Wonderfully humble, brave man with a good heart and a future as an Elvis impersonator!!!!

Amen! I'm thrilled for this gentleman!! I'm encouraged by a person's testimony of overcoming near-death situations and major adversity! This man conducted himself as a gentleman, his interview was good, he was serious, yet quick to laugh, and I enjoyed his song. Anyone who can't be happy for this gent and all the others needs to have a serious talk with the face in his mirror.
