Saved From Death by a Dog on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)
The Marshall-Spreier family isn't just lucky to have a new home ... they're lucky to be alive. Over a year ago, their house was devastated by a fire. Since then, they've been living in tents, camped out in their own backyard -- next to the semi-incinerated remains of their former abode. And time was running out. The family lives in Idaho, and winter was approaching. They needed help to survive ... and quickly. Still, despite their sad story, the family had a lot to be grateful for. They were saved from the fire by the barking of Betsy, the family dog.
Betsy saved the lives of single mom Jane Marshall -- a cancer survivor -- and the lives of her eight children. On 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), Ty Pennington and his team showed up to help the humans, and to honor the dog.
The 'Makeover' squad built a new two-story home for the sprawling Marshall-Spreier clan. The president of Idaho State University also showed up -- to provide all eight kids with full scholarships to the school. But Betsy wasn't left out of the equation. She was given a five-year supply of dog food. And dozens of dogs from around the state were invited to the house to greet her; one was "holding" a sign that said "MOVE THAT BUS!" (A reference to the show's unofficial slogan.)
In addition to the new house with all its trimmings, there was a piece of decorating done just for the dog. Beneath Jane's bed is a special pullout bed just for Betsy. The pet can rest there -- hopefully, she won't need to wake up in the night to save the family again.
