November's Sweet Sweeps Guest Stars

by Jane Murphy, posted Nov 10th 2010 2:30PM
Have you noticed your favorite TV shows have turned it up a notch lately? Well, just look at your calendar. Right about the time we turn our clocks back, TV springs forward with gimmicks (hello, 'Skating with the Stars'!) and guest stars galore to win that all-important ratings period called November sweeps. Advertisers will be crunching the numbers while you clog your DVR with some of the most hotly anticipated episodes of the season.

Synergy comes to McKinley High on November 16 when Gwyneth Paltrow (pictured with Matthew Morrison) plays a singing sub for Mr. Schue on 'Glee'. The guest shot coincides with the buzz building for 'Country Strong', the Christmastime Screen Gems release in which Paltrow also displays impressive vocals. And leave it to the writers who brought you the "Peanut Allergy" Halloween costume to make Coach Sue's mother a "Nazi-hunter" when Carol Burnett drops in as Mama Sylvester on Nov. 23.

Another reason to tune in this November? The opportunity to rediscover stars who've been keeping a low profile of late. John Larroquette, who seems to take a juicy role once every decade, has begun to pop up on 'CSI: NY'. 'Becker' buddy Nancy Travis and John Schneider of 'The Dukes of Hazzard' started their multi-episode 'Desperate Housewives' arc on Nov. 8. And coming up this week, 'Star Trek; The Next Generation' favorite and all-around geek hero Wil Wheaton mind melds with Sheldon on 'The Big Bang Theory' Nov. 11.

Let's talk turkey with more super November sweeps guest stars:

'Ally McBeal' fans rejoice! On 'Grey's Anatomy', Seattle Grace's new pediatrician is played by John Cage himself, Peter MacNichol (Nov. 11). Greg Germann – 'Ally''s Richard Fish – pays the Chance family of 'Raising Hope' a visit on Nov. 23.

Yes, it's another Robin Sparkles episode on 'How I Met Your Mother' when Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger plays a blast from Robin's past. Scherzinger shows up as a music industry friend of the teen pop star-turned-reporter, played by Cobie Smulders (Nov. 15).

John Slattery moves from Madison Ave. to Rockefeller Center this Thursday. Slattery appears as a congressional candidate backed by Jack (Alec Baldwin) on '30 Rock'. Which gives us an idea: could Mrs. Blankenship magically appear as Liz Lemon's secretary?

Rollicking country superstar Lyle Lovett usually brings the deadpan to his acting roles. It'll be interesting to see what he does on the always peppy 'Castle', airing Nov. 15.

Newman Alert! 'Seinfeld' nemesis Wayne Knight guest stars on the Nov. 18 episode of 'Bones' as a Wonka-esque candy manufacturer. Death by chocolate? Only Brennan and Booth know for sure.

'iCarly's Miranda Cosgrove takes on a dramatic role as a teen in trouble who enlists the help of Alicia's firm on 'The Good Wife' Nov. 16.

And in the heard-but-not-seen column: 'The Cleveland Show' welcomes the distinctive drawl of film director David Lynch on Fox's animated series Nov. 14. An hour later, 'Heroes' star Hayden Panettiere lends her voice as a guest on 'American Dad'.
