'Conan' Audience Down 30 Percent on His Second Night

by Catherine Lawson, posted Nov 11th 2010 8:57AM
Conan O'Brien, debut episode of 'Conan', Nov. 2010Has Conan O'Brien lost his touch? In news that will surely bring a smile to Jay Leno's face, it's been reported that the audience for his much-hyped new TV talk show dropped by one-third on the second night out.

According to TBS, 2.8 million people watched Tuesday night's 'Conan,' down from 4.2 million viewers for the debut one night earlier. Although audience figures are not yet available for NBC's 'The Tonight Show' -- which O'Brien quit in January in a showdown with veteran comedian Jay Leno -- it's been averaging 3.6 million viewers nightly so far this season.

Conan's return to late night television after a nine-month absence had been hotly-anticipated, particularly by his younger fans, but many critics -- including our own Maureen Ryan and Joel Keller -- have found his new show lacking.

Some have said that using the same old late night format was uninspiring, and others are already tired of self-referential jokes about his bitter departure from rival NBC and his new home on cable TV.

And in related news, the fallout from the O'Brien--Leno debacle continues, as the NBC executive responsible has lost his job. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Comcast has ousted Jeff Gaspin, Chairman of NBCU Television Entertainment, as part if its management reshuffle at NBC. News of the well-liked Gaspin's departure comes ahead of what many believe will be a full reorganization to be announced next week.

Other shows fared better Tuesday night. Although the audience numbers for 'Glee' (Fox) were down, matching its season low, the musical dramedy still handily beat the opposition in the 8PM time slot with a 4.6 demographic rating. 'NCIS' (CBS) was the runner up with 3.9. Later on, 'Dancing With the Stars' (ABC) edged out 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (CBS) for the top spot at 9PM, while 'Running Wilde' (Fox) and 'Life Unexpected' (The CW) floundered.

Over on CBS, Michael J. Fox's guest spot helped 'The Good Wife' win the 10PM slot with over 12 million viewers and a 2.2 rating.

'Conan' airs weeknights, 11PM on TBS.

Jay's ratings are consistantly running at 3.6. Just saying....

Great scores in the demos and basic cable standards being what they are, settling at around 2 million should be enough to keep this in the 'success' pile.

Can it be because, well, Conan is not very entertaining?

I feel he shot himself in the foot over a half hour with NBC. This boy needs to find something else. Stay off TV.

Conan still had much, mucher higher ratings than Leno/Letterman in the 18-49 demographic. Either the writer of this piece didn't bother to research that, or they specifically omitted it. In any case, his 18-49 rating was only slightly lower than his total viewership, meaning almost all of his viewers fall into the coveted demographic for advertisers.

He's going to be just fine, and even with the drop off TBS management are still probably doing high fives in a chocolate fountain over this.

I'm not surprised either. I think the whole situation left a bad taste in everyone's mouth whether you're a Conan fan or not. People tuned in for the first show because it was an "event" and it wasn't enough to make then return for the next show. From here I predict the numbers will either level off or continue to drop.

Not surprised. Guess a lot his loyal fans had better things to do.
