Jimmy Kimmel Rallies Support for Tomorrow's 'National Unfriend Day' on 'GMA' (VIDEO)

Jimmy Kimmel, 'Good Morning America'With the growing popularity of Facebook, Jimmy Kimmel has decided to take a stand. He's declared Wednesday, November 17th to be National Unfriend Day. He went on 'Good Morning America' (Weekdays, 7AM on ABC) to talk about why he feels such a holiday is necessary in this age of social networking.

People are "spending an inordinate amount of time on Facebook," Kimmel explained. "And I wondered what could possibly be so interesting, and how you could have 900 friends. I mean, no one has 900 friends!"

Unfortunately, it looks like Facebook has a power of its own, and Kimmel's initiative may be backfiring on him. He has jokingly targeted a random young woman, Gina Lovato, who had about 500 friends, for a mass unfriending. Though thanks to Kimmel's publicity, Lovato is now at over 4,000 friends and growing.

"Now she's got 4,000, and that's not exactly how I imagined this going," Kimmel admitted. "But I believe people are setting her up and tomorrow on National Unfriend Day they are going to dump her en masse and she will just be left alone and smoking."

We think it's more likely people are telling Kimmel they're not entirely on-board with his Unfriend campaign. People like connecting with friends and loved ones on Facebook. They even like connecting with casual acquaintances, people they saw at a party once, or that charming cashier they saw last night at Walgreens.

For example, there's a Jimmy Kimmel Facebook page out there which 10,790 people have "liked" as of this writing. Even worse, 43,706 people currently Like the Jimmy Kimmel Live Facebook page. If National Unfriend Day doesn't work out, Jimmy may need to schedule a National Unlike Day later this year to get rid of all of his Facebook fans.

So how about it, Facebookers? How many of you consider all 900 of your Facebook friends to be close personal friends? How many of you are going to spend your Wednesday unfriending them on Facebook? How many of you are going to unlike Kimmel? We're sure you can tune into 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' tomorrow night to see updates on Lovato's page, as well as how his initiative has been received.
