'Glee's' Success Pushes 'American Idol' to Wednesday and Other Fox Scheduling News

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 20th 2010 12:20PM
The season 10 cast of 'American Idol': Steven Tyler, Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez and Randy JacksonIf you wanted to know how big the 'Glee' phenomenon has gotten to this point, look no further than FOX's winter schedule, which was announced late yesterday afternoon.

'Glee' is doing so well in its Tuesday at 8PM ET slot, FOX has decided to shift the venerable 'American Idol' from its traditional Tuesday slot. So, now we'll see the performance show on Wednesdays at 8PM ET and the results show on Thursdays at 8PM ET.

Just like in years past, the arrival of 'Idol' sent ripples throughout the FOX schedule, with shows moving around to new timeslots all over the place. Not sure if viewers will ever get used to FOX's schedule roulette, even though they've been doing it for close to a decade now. But that's why man invented TiVo and the Season Pass, right?

More details, and a full schedule list, are after the jump.

The main time shifts involve two shows with rabid fan bases, 'Bones' and 'Fringe.' 'Bones' will shift to the Thursday at 9PM ET timeslot when on January 20, and 'Fringe' will shift from Thursdays to Fridays at 9PM ET. 'Bones' has performed well so far this season at 8PM, and there's no reason to believe its audience won't watch it an hour later.

'Fringe,' however, is another matter; its Thursday ratings have been weak, and moving it to a "death slot" on Fridays may weaken it even more. The upside, though, is that competition on Fridays isn't nearly as fierce as it is on Thursdays, where 'Fringe' has to go up against 'CSI, 'The Office' and 'Grey's Anatomy.'

But the big shock -- if you can call it that -- of the new schedule is 'Idol' being displaced by the 'Glee' juggernaut. If there ever was a sign that there might be a "changing of the guard" at the network, this is it.

'Idol's' ratings have been in decline for a couple of years and, while the search for the judges to replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres was covered with more fervor than the search for a new Pope, the show's tenth season is still going to be one of transition. Will people accept Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler as the new judges? How much will Cowell be missed? Will the performances of the contestants be good enough to compel people to watch no matter who the judges are?

This feels like FOX's first concession that 'Idol' might be on the wane. Will it still be a strong performer for the network? Absolutely. But it might not be the dominant force that it once was. Then again, when 'Glee' has its inevitable third-season crash and burn, FOX will probably be happy that it'll have both 'Idol' and Cowell's new show 'The X Factor,' on the bench ready to go.

One thing to note: the 'Idol' results show on Thursdays will be an hour long, despite the network and returning producer Nigel Lythgoe's promises that it will be cut to 30 minutes. So expect the padding and infuriating delays by Ryan Seacrest to continue for another season.

The schedule below also includes the premiere dates and timeslots of the network's mid-season replacements, including Shawn Ryan's 'The Chicago Code,' the animated comedy 'Bob's Burgers' and the Christian Slater-led comedy 'Breaking In,' which will premiere on April 6 after the first 90-minute episode of 'Idol.'

And, if you're wondering where 'Running Wilde' is on this schedule, then you're not going to like to hear this: The Futon Critic found out that the show will air the last of its original 13-episode order on December 28, with no word on whether it's returning or not. Maybe now Mitch Hurwitz can get started on finishing that 'Arrested Development' movie now...
