Why Is 'Glee' Obsessed With Bruno Mars? Listen to Both of His Songs From 'Furt' Here

by Jean Bentley, posted Nov 22nd 2010 5:00PM
Bruno MarsTomorrow's episode of 'Glee' is dedicated to the origins of Sue Sylvester and her Nazi-hunting mother, played by Carol Burnett, with a significant side plot dedicated to the nuptials of Kurt's dad and Finn's mom. But it seems the episode is also unofficially dedicated to the oeuvre of Bruno Mars.

Two of the four tracks from 'Furt' are by Mars: the hit single 'Just the Way You Are' and the album cut 'Marry You.' We have just one major question: Which 'Glee' producer is so impressed with Bruno Mars that essentially four of his tracks have been covered this season, which is a mere eight episodes long so far?

Besides the two tracks from tomorrow's show, Mars was featured on the Travie McCoy song 'Billionaire,' which newbie Chord Overstreet covered in the first episode. Plus, Mars co-wrote 'F*** You,' the Cee Lo Green song covered by Gwyneth Paltrow in its radio-friendly form ('Forget You') last week.

That said, the tracks fit well into what little of 'Furt''s plot we know so far. 'Marry You' seems written especially for 'Glee' -- the catchy chorus and driving beat sound especially peppy with the sugary sweet 'Glee' vocals on top.'Just the Way You Are,' on the other hand, drags quite a bit. Maybe it's the fact that we wish another male character had been given lead vocals instead of Finn?

As for the other two songs, Matthew Morrison does a perfectly fine cover of Michael Buble's 'Sway,' while Burnett and Lynch's duet of 'Ohio' is simply magnificent -- between the old-school musical vibe of 'Ohio' and the 'Glee'-ified pep of 'Marry You,' we're having flashbacks from the best parts of season 1, before all the crazy guest stars and dedicated episodes.

Before you listen to the songs, which are embedded below, we bring you this tidbit of news from MTV's Hollywood Crush: the latest artist to get the 'Glee' treatment? Florence and the Machine. Specifically: 'The Dog Days Are Over.'

What do you think of the songs? Are you excited to hear 'Glee' tackle Florence?

Wow, they used a "Wonderful Town" tune! Nice! (Even if Ohio is the armpit of America...Go Blue) A great musical even if most people won't recognize it unless they caught the revival a few years ago.
