Oprah's Favorite Things: The Full List of Things She Didn't Give You

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 23rd 2010 10:30AM
OprahRemember back in 2009 when Oprah Winfrey didn't have her usual 'Favorite Things' episode? Because of the bad economy at the time, Oprah decided that it would have been a little over-the-top to give away expensive gifts.

(Though, wouldn't you think that a bad economy is the best time to do a show like this? Maybe invite some people in need and make it the best Christmas ever?)

She did have a 'Favorite Things' episode in 2008, but gave the audience free recipes and downloadable Christmas songs. If you saw that episode you probably cringed a bit.

So either the economy must be better or Oprah has changed her mind. She had a 'Favorite Things' show -- actually two shows -- this year. And since it's her final season, you knew that the gifts were going to be special.

This year's show was so big that Oprah actually had paramedics standing by in case audience members felt light-headed, had a heart attack or started punching the person next to them because they were so excited.

Here's a list of the items that Oprah gave away to her surprised audience.

OprahLimited-Edition 25th Anniversary Oprah watch by Philip Stein ($2475.00)
Nikon camera ($699.95)

Black-Eyed Peas CD ((17.98)

Sony Bravia 3D TV and Blu-ray player ($3600.00)
2012 Volkswagen Beetle (it won't be announced until May 2011 but Oprah got a sneak peek)
A 7-day cruise, including airfare (who knows)

Grand total: around $18,000, and that's not including the car and the cruise, because those exact prices are unknown. But it's safe to say that every person in Oprah's audience walked away with well over $40,000 worth of stuff.

This was (according to her) Oprah's personal list of her most favorite things of all-time, sort of a greatest hits of favorite things over the years (the Centerville mac & cheese, the UGG boots), with many new things on the list too (the car). Judging from the way the audience reacted, I think they enjoyed themselves.

Though it's funny that Oprah gave away yet another car, considering the controversy that erupted the last time she did that.

Wouldnt the members have to pay a tax on all the items they recieved? Adding it all up, its a hefty sum of money (including cruise, air fare, etc).

I was there. There will be no taxes. Oprah pays for that too!

I can't speak for the people who attended Oprah's other Favorite Things shows in the past, but I was at the taping last Tuesday, and the show I was on was aired yesterday. The purpose of the show I was invited to attend was to honor the heroes that were nominated by people for the work they are doing in their communities. For 7 years I have run a support group for women, and some of my members got together and nominated me for the Oprah Heroes Show. I had no idea that they were doing this. A few weeks later I was invited to Harpo Studios to be on this show for the volunteer work I've done for women worldwide, and I went. Everyone I spoke to before the taping that day was doing heart-felt work for their communities. From working with the homeless to counseling victims of rape, I felt honored to be in the presence of so many people who freely give of themselves. One woman I met had recently lost her job and her car! NONE of us knew that we were going to be on Oprah's Favorite Things show. It was shocking, to say the least, but it was also really great to feel the appreciation from Oprah and her staff for the work that we all do. After the show was done taping, we did openly discuss using our gifts to fund our work directly with Oprah, which many of us are going to do, and she was totally fine and honored that we would use the generosity of her show to help the work we are doing, although she did encourage us to please keep a little something for ourselves. All I can say is that it felt wonderful to be acknowledged for the work I've done--thank you Oprah!

I'd like to know how a trip on a brand new cruise ship could be one of Oprah's favorite things. A trip on a ship she's actually sailed on would qualify, but not this. Obviously that gift, at least, was donated by the cruise line for publicity purposes.
