Jessica Simpson Calls Her Engagement a 'Big Shock,' Shows Off Her New Ring (VIDEO)

If you weren't paying attention this week, you might not know that Jessica Simpson got engaged. And if you're just hearing the news, try guessing who the lucky guy is.

So who is Jessica's new husband-to-be? Tony Romo? John Mayer? Dane Cook? Adam Levine? Billy Corgan? Um ... Tony Romo again?

Nope! The answer is: Former NFL player Eric Johnson. Simpson and Johnson began dating in May, while he was still married. Eric got divorced in October, and he and Jess were engaged five weeks later. On 'Late Night' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC), Simpson discussed her surprise engagement, which was a real surprise to her -- she was almost the last person to know about it.

First, she flashed her new "rock" at Jimmy Fallon, showing off her engagement ring -- it features a ruby and two diamonds, and cost at least $100,000. Very nice! The ring played a key role in the "surprise" aspect of her engagement. Eric told Jessica's family he was going to propose, but waited three weeks before letting his bride-to-be in on the deal. Johnson kept things secret ... by hiding the six-figure ring inside a shoe. Hopefully, it was a nice shoe. Or at least a clean one. After all, you don't want your engagement ring to smell like feet. You want it to have that "new ring" smell.

Jess called her sudden engagement "a big shock." Her ex-husband may be a little shocked too -- at least by the odd timing. Nick Lachey got engaged himself, just a week before Jessica made her own announcement. This is has led some gossips to accuse Jessica of trying to "upstage" her ex. But based on Jessica's surprised reaction to the ring/shoe thing, it doesn't seem like she planned this out ahead of time.
