Barbara Walters Picks Sarah Palin, 'Jersey Shore' Cast as Most Fascinating People of 2010

by Jean Bentley, posted Nov 29th 2010 2:00PM
Barbara WaltersLike it or not, Sarah Palin has managed to stay culturally relevant long after her failed 2008 vice presidential run. So relevant, in fact, that Barbara Walters has chosen Palin, along with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lopez as her Most Fascinating People of 2010.

Also on the list are LeBron James, Kate Middleton, Betty White and the cast of 'Jersey Shore.' An eclectic mix, but certainly a group of people who have dominated headlines throughout the year. The final two slots on the list will be revealed when the TV special airs on Dec. 9.

Middleton is perhaps the timeliest selection, with her engagement to Prince William announced only last week, while others have been yearlong fascinations. Bieber fever seems to have reached epidemic proportions in 2010, and Bullock's movie career took a turn for the better while her personal life took a turn for the worse. Plus, you'd be hard-pressed to remember a life before 'Jersey Shore.' The show only debuted last December -- though it seems a lifetime ago. Maybe Walters can finally explain to us why, exactly, we find that show so mesmerizing.

Lopez is the most interesting choice to me -- though she tried and failed for a musical comeback this year, I feel like she won't get her chance in the spotlight again until she takes her place at the judges' table when 'American Idol' debuts in January. James seemed like a ubiquitous presence when he made his infamous Decision, but don't we know all about him already?

It feels like he was thrown in the mix as the token sports story. What about the U.S. soccer team and Landon Donovan? They were a pretty major athletic force this year too, and would've made a far more interesting choice. Then again, Americans really only take a passing interest in soccer once every four years during the World Cup, so going with the basketball player probably makes more sense.

Tell us: What do you think of Walters' choices? Who do you think was the most fascinating person of the year?

Sarah Palin... awesome! Only those that refuse to get educated about Sarah provide those ignorant responses I've read. Get educated people and you may learn a little bit about a person who is an awesome leader... mother... wife... and a great American Governor with principles! Good Job Barbara Walters!

You really need to work for Sarah Palin on the inside. How many Polar Bears are you willing to forsake for Sara.

How is the cast of Jersey Shore most fascinating? They are teaching our young people how to lose all their morals, lose respect for others as well as for themselves, party till you puke, and shirk all responsibilities. How cool it is to only use an illiterate vocabulary? Our government tries to tell us how to raise our kids, and allows shows like this to be aired! I'd be ashamed to have any one of them as my child! Just a bunch of irresponsible losers! Shame on you Barbara for promoting them in any way!

I'm sick of hearing about all of them, especially the cast of Jersey Shore and Palin.

This list is a joke...Justin Bieber....What is fascinating there? There are not people there who are trying to make the world a better place or honored the military....This is composed by an ignorant, self centered, elderly woman , who, has nothing better to do with her time...Spare me

Sarah Palin should just go away, far far away. LeBron should go away too. Jersey shore no wonder there are so many idiots in the world that watch that shit. Jennifer Lopez please, American idol is doomed too. Barbara I think you should retire.

I agree!! Its either Sarah Palin or the Polar Bear.
Lets dont forget that she wants oil wells in Alaska and did everything she could to stop the cause for the Polar Bear to be put on the endangered animal list. Vote Polar Bear 2012
