'Sanctuary' Season 3, Episode 7 Recap

['Sanctuary' - 'Breach']

The driving force of 'Sanctuary' is based on capturing abnormals, but there's another layer to the show that relies heavily on a certain mythology involving Helen Magnus and the other members of The Five: John Druitt, Nikola Tesla, James Watson and Nigel Griffin (The Invisible Man). This part of the show is always the most interesting, in my opinion, and this week's episode harkened back to this world.

First, we were introduced to a new character, Adam -- a.k.a. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde -- who first appeared dressed like a bona fide Tusken Raider. Later, we found out that Magnus had apparently killed him at some point in the past, but the circumstances were unclear.

So far, Adam is an interesting character and the writers did a good job of introducing him the way that they did. He pulled off the whole schizophrenia-paranoia bit nicely and there were definite, yet subtle, distinctions between his two personalities.

When he was Dr. Jekyll, he adopted a Scottish accent (a nice nod to the characters' creator, Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson), and it was obvious that he didn't want to hurt Magnus; Mr. Hyde was controlling the situation. As Mr. Hyde, he was crass and clearly unhinged.

Oh and I did I mention that he can teleport? Adam has the ability to speed up time, which causes fractures in the fabric of the universe. When this happens, he can tear a rift into the time vortex and move from one place to other. I have a feeling that this ability will come in handy down the road.

Since the details of his past with Magnus are still a bit hazy it was hard to gauge whether or not he was justified in trying to kill her. I love Magnus, but she has a bad habit of helping people she shouldn't. This encounter with Adam will most likely backfire, and I don't even want to think about how Nikola will react when they meet again. Adam said that he was always fond of Nikola, but I'm not so sure Nikola feels the same about him.

Everything happening on 'Sanctuary' right now is geared towards the quest to find this holographic city. Where is it? Who lives there? Why did Magnus's father send her the map? These are the questions that still need to be answered, but we did get a lot more information about this holographic city through Adam.

He confessed to her that he'd been to the city before, but it's still not clear when or how. It was also revealed that the chameleon creatures from 'Firewall' were Adam's spies sent to gather information from Will about Gregory. Adam told Magnus that Gregory may still be alive and that the key to finding him lies with her finding the city.

He also made reference to keystones, which I'm guessing is some sort of Rosetta Stone used to read the map, but Magnus had no clue what he was referring to. I think he was testing her to see how much she already knew about the map.

We were left with a lot of unanswered questions about him, like, how did he survive the gunshot and fall at the Grand Canyon? How did he find the city the first time? What else does he know about the map, Gregory Magnus and the hollow Earth? The writers left the door open for further development of this character, and I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing a lot more of him in future episodes.

This whole plot surrounding the holographic city is very intriguing, but I'm more confused about it then ever. All these little bits and pieces are being revealed, but none of it really makes a whole lot of sense at this point. I hope that once Magnus, Nikola, Adam (and possibly Druitt?) get together and share information, things will make more sense.

Observations and Quotations:

- I liked the way Magnus handled herself in this episode. She was resourceful and, frankly, badass.

- I thought it was pretty funny that Will and Kate were practically frozen the entire time Magnus was trapped.

- "I killed you once, this would just be a loose end!" - Magnus to Adam

'Sanctuary' airs Fridays, 8PM ET on Syfy.
