Jeffrey Donovan to Direct 'Burn Notice' Prequel Movie Starring Sam Axe
"When you're directing a TV movie in Colombia, what you don't want to do is..."OK, there's no word on whether the upcoming 'Burn Notice' prequel movie will have those distinctive voiceovers, but we do know who is directing the film: the show's star, Jeffrey Donovan.
Donovan will direct co-star Bruce Campbell in a story that will follow Sam Axe's adventures on a tricky mission in Colombia. The TV movie will be shot on location early next year and debut on USA in the spring.
"He was a real Navy SEAL, not a joke Navy SEAL," Nix said in last summer at Comic-Con. "What made him go from that to a guy who lives in Miami drinking beer and lives off rich women? That's what we'll find out."
That all sounds fine, but allow me to make a key casting suggestion for the Sam Axe movie.
Don't you think that Sam Axe would have had dealings with one John Casey during Axe's days as a butt-kicking Navy SEAL? I certainly think so. And hey, synergystically speaking, 'Chuck,' in which the great Adam Baldwin plays the espionage agent John Casey, is part of the same media conglomerate that owns USA.
So come on, USA, make my wish come true and have Sam Axe meet John Casey. Please?
If you want more intel on the Sam Axe movie, USA's press release is below. Also, Matt Nix and Bruce Campbell talked about the prequel flick in the Comic-Con videos and story that I posted last summer here.
One more 'Burn Notice' tidbit before you go: The show's season 4 finale on Dec. 16 will be two hours long and will feature two great 'Burn Notice' guest stars -- Jay Karnes as Brennen and Tim Matheson as Larry.
Larry "cares for Michael's soul," Nix said at Comic-Con. According to Nix, Larry wants Michael to leave a life that is too driven by sentiment and personal ties. Brennen "cares about Michael's brain," he noted. "He's never believed a single word Michael has ever said."
The text of USA's Tuesday press release is below:
LOS ANGELES, CA – Tuesday, November 30, 2010 – Jeffrey Donovan is set to direct the upcoming BURN NOTICE MOVIE starring Bruce Campbell. Shooting will begin in January on location in Bogota, Colombia. The two-hour movie will air on USA Network in Spring 2011.
The prequel, set in late 2005, begins after a faction of Colombian rebels makes trouble for the locally stationed military platoon, with Lieutenant Commander Sam Axe (Campbell) being sent down to advise. As the mission unfolds, Sam begins to uncover the dark secrets of the area, learning the truth about sacrifice, deception, and ultimately what's worth fighting for.
BURN NOTICE creator Matt Nix will write and executive produce. Donovan and Campbell will also serve as executive producers on the Fox Television Studios project alongside Mikkel Bondesen ("Burn Notice").
BURN NOTICE continues to be one of the hottest shows on television, as the #1 scripted show on basic cable this past summer averaging 3.4 million in P25-54, 3.1 million in P18-49 and 7.3 million total viewers
