Kevin Williamson Developing Companion Series to 'The Vampire Diaries'

Kevin WilliamsonDoes Kevin Williamson ever find time to sleep?

Judging from the 'Vampire Diaries' mastermind's frequent middle-of-the-night tweets, probably not, but his lack of zzzz's is our gain: According to Deadline Hollywood, Williamson is creating a companion series to his hit CW show.

It's not a spinoff or a sequel, just a supernatural-themed drama about a group of (probably gorgeous) people who investigate paranormal happenings. Deadline reports that an insider describes the show as "'The X-Files' meets 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.'" Did you hear that? It was the sound of millions of smart sci-fi fans squealing with joy, followed by the sound of millions of 'Vampire Diaries' fans swooning at the casting possibilities.

Those same 'Vampire Diaries' fans know that the first post-show thought -- well, after clearing your brain of the "OMG"s and "WTF"s following the cliffhanger -- is always "We have to wait how long for a new episode?" This new show wouldn't exactly scratch that itch, but another full hour packed with insane action from Williamson and witty writing from his 'Vampire Diaries' co-producer Julie Plec, who will also reportedly be involved in the new series, is always welcome.

In fact, if Williamson and Plec can use their one-off story ideas for this procedural with a twist while maintaining the fast-paced story on 'The Vampire Diaries,' The CW could have a powerhouse two-hour block of TV on their hands. (Assuming the new series is picked up by the network, that is ... but they'd be insane to pass up a project of this pedigree and with this large of a built-in fan base.) As long as they don't neglect 'Vampire Diaries' in favor of their new baby, I'm there.

This is the first project to come from the three-year deal Williamson signed with Warner Bros. TV earlier this month.

Tell us: Would you watch this new show? Are you worried about the effect it would have on 'The Vampire Diaries,' or do you trust Kevin Williamson to handle both shows with equal ?

My thoughts exactly...the CW has a show like this-Supernatural, which is just as good, if not better than "The Vampire Diaries," but doesn't get nearly the love.

Oh, and the cast of Supernatural is pretty darn gorgeous, too.
