'American Idol' to Introduce Online Semi-Final Voting?

'American Idol'We're now officially in the thick of the holiday season, but there's another annual celebration we should start preparing for: 'American Idol' season.

Though the show doesn't premiere until January, today brings the first of what will surely be many, many 'Idol'-related stories to come over the next month. According to Reality Blurred, some intrepid 'AI' sleuths have deduced how the field will be narrowed down to the finalists now that the semi-final rounds are out: online voting.

Though convenient, introducing online voting into the 'Idol' process could have some unintentionally disastrous consequences. After the jump, read why we think it could be a good idea -- and also why it could be a very bad one.

Just to be clear: This is not official news from Fox, but it is a likely (and probable) explanation for several clues floating around the internet right now. 'Idol'-tracking website AI Now noted that the Twitter bio for an account titled "AI10 Contestants" reads "Voting begins Thursday, February 24 at ATT.com/Idol." Plus, an insider told Vote for the Worst that 40 to 50 contestants will be prominently featured during the five Hollywood episodes, with viewers voting online for the top 12 contestants. Three more finalists will be chosen via a judges' wild card.

Why this could be great:
Finally, a way for our favorite unfairly axed-during-Hollywood Week singers to get voted through. Remember when Danny Gokey's buddy Jamar Rogers didn't advance but Bikini Girl did? Perhaps online voting could've prevented such a massive injustice.

Why this could be terrible:
Online voting is open for scandal. There are plenty of hackers who could do some damage, voting the worst candidates through (hm, a familiar concept) or rigging the process in favor of specific singers. Just look at the whole Bristol Palin/Tea Party conspiracy theory from this season of 'Dancing With the Stars.' Did the Tea Party actually vote Palin to the finals? Another downside: It's way easier for lusty viewers to click a couple thousand times for the attractive yet mediocre performers. Tim Urban, anyone?

Tell us: Is online voting a good idea?

A no-talent diva like J-Lo can ruin any show--expecially one that features singing. Also, the producers should cut down on the many silly performances by some singers during the tryouts.
Most importantly, however, losing Simon will defintely hurt the new show. He was the real star.

i THINK, THAT THE PANEL/ AND THE VIEWERS SHOULD VOTE AT SAME TIME, COMBINING THEM, iT MAY BE A LITTLE MORE FAIR, BUT THERE STILL ARE GOING TO BE THOSE WHO ABUSE THE SYSTEM. i THINK THE JUDGES,SHOULD HAVE A BIG PART OF THE VOTES EVRY SHOW. 50/50, OR SOME KIND
OF INPORT, sEEMS LIKE IT HAS BECOME A POPULARITY CONTEST,NOT ABOUT TALENT.i FEEL SORRY FOR JUDGES, HAVIN TO LISTEN TO, THE PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY HAVE TALENT. STOCK UP ON HEADACHE MED.GOOD LUCK

If they want to do something positive, they ought to make voting by phone only and limit each phone number to ten votes. Plain and simple, more people would vote, and it would be much more difficult for fewer people to determine the outcome. A great many people, including myself, gave up on voting because it is just ridiculous to vote for two hours, or four hours for the final. If AI wants more viewers, make it user friendly for everyone.

AMERICAN IDOL SUCKS !!! Just wait till The X-Factor gets here next year..... That will mean an end to Idol. That show is 1000x better. I have been watching it the last 3 season and people who have won that have gone farther than an Idol winner.

Simon will never as a judge let the crap people that auditioned for Idol like that on and the other judges will have extensive music back grounds.. No one like Ellen and so on..

Every Idol winner has bombed big time except for Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson who has switched over to country but still will never be big. What happend to last years winner ? Nothing he sucked and all the other..

Steven Tyler lowered himself but money talks but then again does he need it ? No and only reason Jennifer Lopez is there is because of the big ass amount of money

Keep it the way it is, online hacking will ruin it.

I wouldn't be surprised if American Idol lasts
through the year 2014, so online voting will work.

How ever the programs are scheduled we need to remember that their main goal is entertainment. So the funny ( Betty White), the ridiculous ( bikini girl)etc all go thru to entertain us. If anyone has really paid attention the real and best win. The mediocre are sloughed off , then the entertainers and in the end it's always between the best - except Brandi- my feeling was she and Jennifer and Kyle ( the so dark and wonderful horse) would be final three. ????? What happened there ? Its all for entertainment - Now if we could only vote this way for our President.

The best way to fix what is called idol is to take it off the air and show it for what it really is a scam and also a program which show discrimination because if one is over 25 they can not be on that program even though they may have all sorts of talent.

Rocky - If thats the way you feel all programs are fakes. Married with children - they were not married.
Survival - ha with a camera crew ?? Desperate housewives ? Now lets talk real housewives - husbands gone, one income, raising 3 children. Lets stick with the reality of the Simpsons hey ??

Rob, I've been saying that for years. A "vote out the best" campaign would be harder to stage than "vote for the worst" and cute but talentless singers would be easier to get rid of.

I think the problem, from the producers' perspective, is that they want to know who the popular contestants are (those who might sell the most albums) so that they can use little tricks like giving them better arrangements and mixing, or more favorable positions in the performance order. If we were voting for who should leave, they would have no clue as to who is most likely to make money for them.
