'Dog Whisperer': Finding a New Leash on Life (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 6th 2010 2:10AM
'Dog Whisperer': Finding a New Leash on Life Sometimes you have to ask: Is a pet a hopeless case, or has he just not found the right home? That's the question on the latest 'Dog Whisperer' (Fri., 8PM ET on Nat Geo). Trainer Casar Millan is often the last hope for frustrated dog-owners. But in this case, the dog in question doesn't even have an owner.

You might call Maury "frisky," Or you might just call him "high-strung." Or you might even call him "insanely annoying." Maury has been in and out of the local animal rescue clinic. The big brown dog just has too much energy, and he inevitably ends up biting his new owner, then winding up in the shelter again. This has been going on for two years, and the staff at rescue services are starting to think he's unadoptable. Can Maury find a home in the world?

Yes he can, with Cesar's help. The secret is to channel Maury's energy, so Cesar finds him a new home and a new job -- as a search dog for All States K-9 Detection, a company whose dogs can sniff out drugs, weapons ... even cell phones. K-9 Chief Harlen "Lamb" Lambert is mightily impressed with Maury's enthusiasm -- as the pet repeatedly dives into a crate filled with plastic bottles to find a single tennis ball: "The drive he has! [It makes] me all bubbly inside!"

Suddenly, Maury's friskiness has a function. He has a new lease -- or rather, a new "leash" -- on life. And not only is he good at his job, he doesn't want to stop doing it! OH! WHO'S A GOOD BOY NOW?

" Karen Pryor has been successfully training dogs for 20 years."............Sorry, K9Sue, but as I said earlier, that is not correct. Karen has never worked as a dog trainer or even a hobbiest. The only dog she claims to have ever trained was named Gus - he's mentioned in her autobiography, Lads Before the Wind. One problem... she trained Gus BEFORE she was a porpoise trainer. In a class in a park with a choke chain - the same tool used by Cesar Milan. As for the AVSAB, they use a handful of papers written in the early to mid 1960's primarily by Nate Azrin to justify their attacks on Milan. So what? Azrin tested a handful of rats and pigeons. He shocked them silly for no reason and then extrapolated his ideas from there. Milan suggests contingent punishment (and applies it poorly) but the studies used to attack his work were on non-contingent punishment. i.e. no logical connection. Oh, one other thing. Azrin's work was later contradicted by colleagues like Roger Ulrich. Meaning, the scientists you cite cherry pick the literature to criticize Cesar. You can't fake scientific evidence to contradict your oponent, you have to use valid studies in a logical manner. No such studies exist - which is why they are citing 45 year old literature. So, yes, Milan has many flaws, which is why every show starts with the statement "don't do this." Unfortunately, the people you cite don't have a warming on the label but produce no more consistent results...and it's not very entertaining, to boot.

Had once thought a lot of Cesar Millan however after seeing him recently on a program where he stated that while he is NOW Legal, he had been in our country Illegally and had been sent back to Mexico and the he would return, only to be sent back. He had no respect for our country and our laws and I now find that I can no longer respect him and the work he does! Respect begets Respect!

If you knew anything about Cesar you would know he paid a huge fine for coming here illegally and he is now legal.

"He has a nice sounding program that appeals to people that have no clue to the works of people like Karen Pryor"...Dear Desi, your comment illustrates the problem. You cite Cesar's deficiencies as a dog trainer while citing Karen Pryor - a woman who doesn't train dogs and never has. Don't bother to argue the point, I've known her for over 20 years and we were colleagues for five. To compare apples to apples, you'd have to tell us what Ian Dunbar's success rate is. I've known him for over 20 years and we have spoken at the same conferences on many occasions. I have yet to see him train a dog in public. He shows up and talks. Actual training at conferences almost never happens. So, why limit your critique to Cesar? You do not offer the success rates of those other people as a counter argument and, like me, I bet you've never seen them train a dog in real life. It's all simply entertainment, Desi. You simply prefer a different flavor of Kool-Aid.

Countless experienced and real world successful dog behaviorists (including the Veterinary Behaviorist Society) do not support the methods used by Cesar. All work in the real world with real success rates. "It Works" is not always the answer either. My relative with the ecollar claims "it works" because his dogs are under control, but like a tortured prisoner, they are too scared to move and have serious behavior issues. I have been training dogs for 35+ years from pet manners, to Competition Obedience to Service Dogs to K9 working dogs with much success. Teach with reward and focus with impulse control. Positive is not permissive and force only teaches fear. PS, the "dog pack" mentality with the "alpha" idea is so outdated, not only are dogs not wolves, but not even wolves use force for control within its pack. If you want a list - google it yourself. Karen Pryor has been successfully training dogs for 20 years. She is only one of many, I coudl make a long list. Just because they don't have an edited produced reality TV show does not mean they don't exist.

We have four Chihuahua's and our dog sitter who is wonderful watches Ceasar's show. He has taught our dogs many things through Ceasar. Every time we come home to our dogs we are insanely happy with the results. Everyone that meets our Chihuahua's say they are very well behaved. Thank you Ceasar for helping dogs and owners in need!

Cesear Millan has a self admitted 30% sucess rate! why would anyone listen to this man's drabble? He has no idea of what it really means to train dogs. He has a nice sounding program that appeals to people that have no clue to the works of people like Karen Pryor, Emma Parsons, Ian Dunbar, and many other REAL dog trainers and rehabilitators. Do yourself a favor if you're a fan, learn dog ethology, read books other than his, and see the TRUTH for yourself.

Do I detect sour grapes??? I have used Cesar's methods on two dogs and they work great. I have read many other books and tried other methods that only seem to work with continuous repetitions and then only marginally. If you are not respected as the pack leader the dog will not be stable.

Cesar is so correct this time. Everyone needs to make sure the dog they pick is suitable for their lifestyle. Too many peopel choose dogs by their appearance, not temperment, then expect the dog to change. I love my breed, but they are high energy dogs and need work hours every day. I do not recommend them as pets.
