'Talking TV' Podcast with 'Men of a Certain Age' Co-creator Mike Royce

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 6th 2010 11:15AM
A little later today, I'll be posting a review of the fine second season of 'Men of a Certain Age,' which returns to TNT 10PM ET Monday.

If you need some 'MOACA' goodness before then, the Talking TV podcast has an interview with executive producer Mike Royce, who created the series along with one of its stars, 'Everybody Loves Raymond's' Ray Romano. In 'MOACA,' Romano plays Joe, a recently divorced party-store owner who is navigating the tricky waters of middle age with the help of his good friends Terry (Scott Bakula), an aging actor, and Owen (Andre Braugher), the manager of a car dealership.

Royce talked about the evolution of the show from season 1 to season 2 and how 'MOACA' calibrates its finely observed mixture of comedy and drama. (In season 2, the show's combination of those elements feels just right, and there's also a bit more narrative momentum.)

I'll discuss all that in more depth in the 'MOACA' review, but I hope you enjoy the chat with Royce. Like Romano, he's a former standup comic, so we had some laughs as we talked about the new challenges faced by Joe, Owen and Terry.

As always, the podcast is available on iTunes, and non-iTunes fans can get the MP3 files or listen to this week's chat here.

If you ever want to check out past podcasts from the archives, you can find every single 'Talking TV' recording at this site.
