Sarah Palin and Her Father Hunt and Kill a Caribou (VIDEO)
On the new episode of 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' (Sun., 9PM ET on TLC) Sarah and her father -- Charles "Chuck" Heath -- head north to the tundra, traveling above the Arctic Circle. There, joined by her dad's friend Becker, the father and daughter hunt caribou. Sarah herself wears a hunting cap with the words "Girls and Guns" embroidered in pink. And Sarah Palin is the first person to make a kill. After missing several shots, Sarah takes dead aim through the sight of her rifle, squeezes off a final round, and kills the enormous animal. The caribou suddenly crumples to the ground. "Dere ya go, baby!" Mr. Heath yells to his daughter.
"When you're shootin', everything seems to be happening very, very quickly," Sarah says. But then, Sarah does pause -- and in her voice-over speech she quotes controversial conservative activist Ted Nugent. "In the words of Ted Nugent," she says, while standing over the dead caribou's body, "we thank that mighty animal for living a good life and now sustaining a nice family."
This episode has already sparked debate, with Ms. Palin using its theme to take dead aim at "anti-hunting hypocrisy." Though the series was pitched as a "non-political" show, Sarah herself is very willing to use it as a springboard for her political views. As with so many things involving the former Governor, reactions to tonight's installment have been divided. ... And next week on the show, Ms. Palin will be joined by guest Kate Gosselin -- which could invite debate of a different kind, based on the pairing of the two celebrity mothers.
