'The Amazing Race' Season 17, Episode 11 Recap
['The Amazing Race' - 'I'm Surrounded by Ninjas!']If the moon is truly in the seventh house and Jupiter is definitely aligned with Mars, if all that is good is right with the world ... then we all know that it's time for Nick and Vicki to leave 'The Amazing Race.' If Vicki could switch out partners at this late date, that would be fine, but Nick must go.
But, this show isn't always that predictable. Reality shows often don't go quite the way the fans want them to go. True, it would take a miracle for Nick and Vicki to overcome both a six-hour penalty and a Speed Bump, but you never know.
Yeah, right. Like they could pull that off! Of course they were Philiminated! Not only were they six hours behind and facing the Speed Bump, they missed the first flight out to the next destination. The other three teams were on a flight to Seoul, South Korea, at 12:25AM. Nick and Vicki caught a flight about nine hours later. Much too late in the race, Nick decided to be the good guy and roll with the flow.
So this leg ended up being a race between the other three teams, all more deserving of the win. At least they're not quitters like Nick was last week. Due to all being on the same flight, they all started out even once again. Once the teams hit South Korea, it was off to the DMZ (demilitarized zone). Say what? Isn't that just a bit dangerous?
Why, yes it is. However, the element of danger seemed to give the teams an adrenalin boost, something that they all needed to keep plugging along. While Jill and Thomas tend to be the top dogs, Nat and Kat are more of a thinking team. They actually got a tourist to buy them a travel book of South Korea in the airport. Smart women, those doctors!
My personal favorites still in the race, Brook and Claire, let me down a bit this week. Yes, I'd still like them to win, but they made the epic 'TAR' mistake of not reading the clue. Argh! Come on, really? Perhaps their minds have turned to mush with the whirlwind race. Whatever the reason, they took a taxi at one point instead of walking or taking the subway as directed by the clue. Although they also bickered a bit later on, it wasn't anything like the Nick or Thomas insults while sniping, so that's forgiven. But, for gosh sakes, read the damn clue!
Tonight was just about everything you'd expect in a leg -- bad taxi drivers, a lack of English both spoken and written on signs, and some way cool challenges. Whitewater rafting is always a fun challenge. Perhaps it's not all that challenging with all the gear and guides, but the teams really enjoy it and it gets their spirits up every time.
The "finding this in a sea of that" aspect of the Roadblock -- finding a specific headband on one of 200 soldiers doing taekwondo -- added yet another neat dimension. While those are never easy to do, this one added a bit of danger. I hope that Nick got bopped by one of them if he did it. Actually, they weren't really shown much throughout the leg because they were so far behind. They apparently washed tanks as their Speed Bump on the military base.
Surprisingly, everyone took the speed-skating selection on the Detour, even those who had never skated. This is where Claire and Brook had their cross words. Claire was reluctant to skate, Brook wanted to skate, Claire got all passive-aggressive about it, and then it turned out just fine. What wasn't just fine was that they took a cab. Jill, in particular, was very suspicious about how they got ahead and she'd soon know.
We can't know for certain if Brook and Claire would have won the leg had they not taken the cab and received a 30-minute penalty. Jill and Thomas ended up dazed and confused going into the last clue, plus had cab problems. But Brook and Claire wouldn't have hit the Detour as quickly as they did.
That's all water under the raft now. Jill and Thomas ended up with the win for this leg as Brook and Claire sat out their penalty time. Nat and Kat came in third. Nick and Vicki were Philiminated. All is good with the world. My personal vote for the best line of the night was Vicki claiming that she thought it was admirable that she made it through to that point without killing Nick. Now, that would have been good TV!
