Pat Buchanan Actually Argues That Only Property Owners Should Be Allowed to Vote (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Dec 8th 2010 6:25PM
Last week, Judson Phillips, president of the Tea Party Nation, stated that he believes it makes sense to limit voting rights to only Americans who own property.

It's a bizarre position that would move the country backwards nearly 200 years, and because it's not an idea anyone takes seriously, Phillips' statement didn't get much attention in the mainstream press. But on 'Hardball With Chris Matthews' (weekdays, 5PM ET on MSNBC), Matthews found someone who was willing to offer Phillips lukewarm support: the always-interesting Pat Buchanan.

"When I was out in St. Louis (in my younger days) and I was renting, I didn't bother voting and stuff, I was having a good time," Buchanan recalled. "And the people who lived there and owned houses were really concerned about schools and about traffic and they really got concerned in the community, and there is no doubt they were better citizens of the community than I was."

There's no chance America would ever adopt restrictions on voting based on property ownership -- but he he does see the logic in it. He also added that Phillips shouldn't be dismissed as a nut. We're not so sure.
