Virginia Madsen Signs on For Recurring Role in 'The Event'

Virginia MadsenNBC's sci-fi drama 'The Event' may be on a three-month hiatus from our screens, but that doesn't mean that production has shut down. It's been announced that Virgina Madsen ('Sideways,' 'Scoundrels') has signed on for a recurring role

According to deadline.com, the Oscar nominee will play Catherine Lewis, the widow of a US senator from Alaska who has taken over her late husbands post. "A former powerhouse attorney, the Harvard graduate is determined to carry out her husband's legacy at any cost."

Lewis is described as a "major recurring" character, and the role was reportedly first offered to Connie Britton ('Friday Night Lights,' 'Spin City') back in November.

The introduction of a major character at this stage suggests that producers may be using the midseason hiatus to rework aspects of the show. After a strong reception at Comic Con in the summer the series premiered to good ratings and critical buzz. But ratings have been heading downward since the pilot aired, and although NBC placed a full season order for 22 episodes back in October, rumors persist that 'The Event' is in trouble.

However, despite the fact that critics stopped comparing it to 'Lost' and started comparing it to 'FlashForward', 'The Event' remains one of the most DVRed shows on TV. Plus, like other new dramas this year, such as 'The Walking Dead,' it airs in some overseas markets within days of being shown in the US, thereby allowing NBC to recoup some of the production costs earlier than normal.

New episodes of 'The Event' air Mondays, from Feb. 28, 9PM ET on NBC.
