Year-End Podcast Party: Top 10 Lists, Golden Globes and Jay Harrington of 'Better Off Ted'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 15th 2010 12:15PM
We have two 'Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan' podcasts for your listening pleasure this week.

* In Podcast 1, actor Jay Harrington, who played the title character in the late, lamented 'Better Off Ted,' joined us to talk about his memories of the ABC show. It's really a shame when a network cancels a show as creative and brilliant as 'Better Off Ted' (which landed in Ryan McGee's Top 10 list and mine as well), but in our 33-minute Veridian Dynamics-approved therapy session podcast, we recalled what made the show special and reminded ourselves that it's still out there for future fans to enjoy (via DVD or Netflix streaming). Three ways to find the Jay podcast: Subscribe here, grab the MP3 or listen here, or check it out on this site.

* Ryan has dubbed Podcast 2 'The Piper Perabo Power Hour.' That's your clue that we gabbed for a bit about the Golden Globes nominations (we discussed what we liked, what we didn't and what purpose the awards serve -- and yes, there is one, in my view). But for the majority of the podcast, we talked about a number of shows from our year-end Top 10 lists. A detailed breakdown of the podcast is below.

Here's the time codes of what we talked about when (but be aware that some shows, such as 'Weeds' and 'Breaking Bad,' are mentioned throughout the hour).

0 -- 15:35: Around that mark, we began lamenting the lack of 'Lost' nominations and then we segued into a discussion of the show itself, which was on both our Top 10 lists (by the way, Ryan's lists are here and here).

15:36 -- 18:44: 'Lost'

18:45 -- 24:30: 'Weeds' and shows that don't keep repeating the same formulas.

24:31 -- 31:05 : 'Breaking Bad' and the difficulties (and pleasures) in the darkest cable shows ('Weeds' is mentioned in this discussion as well)

31:06 -- 38:56: 'Doctor Who'

38:57 -- 49:29: 'Fringe' -- what we liked, season 3's MacGuffin and the move to Friday. (There's also a brief mention of 'The Walking Dead' at 48:20).

49:30 -- 51:56: 'Cougar Town'

51:57 -- 55:17: 'The Good Wife'

55:18 -- 1:07: 50: 'Parks and Recreation' -- non-spoiler-y thoughts about season 3, what works about the NBC show (which returns Jan. 20) and optimism and aspiration as threads that permeate a whole slew of recent shows.

1:07:51 -- end: General tomfoolery as well as a mention of the eBay charity auction that is going on now. Check out the swag for sale!

Great interview with Jay. I really loved Better Off Ted and was sad to see it canceled.

Thanks for still mentioning Lost. I finally got around to watching the special features on the DVD. I wanted some distance after the finale, which I loved. I can't believe how affected I was watching it. I cried thru much of it. Seeing the cast talk about finishing and reliving the finale. Guh! Killed Me Ded! I was never a mega fan who rewatched eps over and over and analyzed every detail, but I loved those people!

I think every podcast should end with a little slash fic. Maybe a new pairing each week. :D
